Any time y’all are in Oakland – gimme a shout –
I can play this game! Here’s my “music cave” where my band gets together to play. Plus I let a few other people come by and practice if they want –

June 23, 2021 at 3:52 pm in reply to: Questions about original bridge pin and neck up guitar support concern #5947The neck-up wont cause any problems to finish, unless you leave it stuck on your guitar for long period of time – days or weeks or more. But if you remove it after each session, wipe your guitar down, you should be fine –
I wish I knew more about how social media like Facebook and such work. I’ve been on Facebook for a number of years, and avoided being very involved with it, but too many other friends and groups only use it for their posts and announcements, plus it seems posting videos can be much easier for many people.
The group page I’ve set up on Facebook is visible to anyone on Facebook, but I think I have it set so you need to request membership to post on it, just like this forum. I will be trying to post interesting things on the Facebook group page, so that people seeing them will hopefully join us all here on this forum, but if they (like so many people) go on Facebook a few times every day, they may just look there. I’d encourage everyone to post on this Forum, but if something good gets posted on FB, I’ll try to add a link over here. And vice-versa –
I won’t speak for anyone else, but I am very open to advice and ideas about how to share or link these different sites, and tie in the podcasts, and even get better links to the projects and postings our SC artists and forum members have on other sites. There’s a lot of good stuff out there, and I think our members can help sort the good stuff out, and share it with the rest of us.
This is OUR forum – what WE all want from it, and that we all can contribute, just helps make it a more fun and interesting place for all of us – and that includes inviting your friends, especially guitar appreciators, to join us, on whatever platform they prefer –
Can’t wait to see a little finish on that mahogany! It should really pop!
I’m the same way with changing strings – I think I should change the strings on a guitar, so I take it out of it’s case, sit down and start playing it, and end up just playing for a while until I get called away. It’s not that I don’t ever change them, but it’s awful easy to get sidetracked, and do something more fun –
The one technique I’ve learned is to pull the guitar out, and don’t play it – just take the strings off – that kinda forces me to complete the job, even if dinner’s getting cold –
I wish I had some! -maybe my wife took some –
Have you called the shop and asked? They may be able to make one easily – they have made a number of H12 and H14s, both paddle and slot heads, as well as the H13, and I’m pretty sure they’ve made short scale versions of those. Their standard short scale is 24.75” – I don’t think they started building a 24.9” scale until Eric Skye requested it for his signature model, now they’re tooled for it, so they may be able to offer it on other models as well. And I’m not sure what options there might be for body depth – they’ve made a few deep body models, so I’m not sure if it’s an option for any model. They also have done cutaways on a bunch of models, so thats an option too –
so between body size, body depth, neck join, cutaway, and scale length – especially with the H model – I have a feeling they could successfully build most anything you ask – but you won’t know for sure unless you make the call!
Tinting or staining wood is amazingly easy – to do badly – especially with softwoods, like the spruce usually used for tops. They can easily absorb color unevenly, especially if there is any figure (like bearclaw) in the piece, so its important to seal the top to try to get an even color. But if you seal the top, its hard to get dyes to soak into the grain, which are what give you the most clarity and depth of color. Pigments can be applied to the surface, which can give you a nice even coloration, but tend to obscure the grain a bit more. You can also tint the top coats. So many options to achieve lots of appearances. So when you say dark, its important to think about how much grain you want to see – you start to get too dark, and any indication of grain practically disappears. Its pretty tricky, so I’d see what Carolyn suggests –
June 3, 2021 at 2:29 am in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break #25 Zoomin’ with SONiA Disappear Fear #5841I bought my Sonia model SCGC based purely on the specs, but then started to learn about Sonia and her music shortly afterwards. Then I had the opportunity to have coffee and talk with her at the shop the morning after the 35th Anniversary show, and got to know what a really nice person she is. The podcast was very fun – she really loves playing guitar and performing ( notice how she’s playing things silently on her guitar while we are talking ) and then we asked if she would record a greeting for Happy Traum before we did his new signature model podcast, and she just launched into a song with complete spontaneity – she’s really great!
I’ve never seen a SC with a zero fret – but I’m sure Richard could build one if he wanted. My most immediate thought would be that if Richard felt there was a real benefit to building with a zero fret, he’d be doing it, or at least offering it as an option. Since he isn’t, and doesn’t, I’d be inclined to think that he doesn’t feel there are any good reasons to do it.
But, I wouldn’t think to speak for him – maybe we can use this as a discussion topic for a future podcast. Or maybe he’ll weigh in here (if he isn’t too busy – which he usually is). I’d also like to ask him about their fine-tuning custom builds for specific SC string sets – that could be very interesting –
Mahogany / redwood 00 – mmmm, that is something I’d really like to hear! It sure does look fantastic!
Just got done listening to all – nice job! Very good recording, everything sounded great, and a nice choice of songs!
Kudos!
Get some good recordings! I’m sure Dee will sound great! 😉
Brilliant idea – lemme chase down a couple ideas –
