Yow! very nice stuff! But with all these fancy Tree guitars, don’t you need to find an equally fancy clear backed case to show it off?
š
Theres a section called Recording Studio where you can post recordings youāve made –
Very sorry to hear about your loss – Ā I guess youāre one of the few who can actually answer – Which guitar did you grab as you ran out the door?
What a cool headstock inlay – maybe we need to push for something like that on the 45th anniversary special?!?
`When the opportunity to buy the 4th guitar built by the young SCGC company came up, I jumped on it despite some of the hard trails its been down, and I think the magic was apparent even back then – Ā and I really love the old logo –

A full plek job is a pretty serious amount of work, and if your only concern is that the action is a little high, it may be much more than you need. Ā If youāre reasonably local, Iād run ot by the shop and get their opinion on what the best thing to do is. Ā If youāre not nearby, have you had a good tech or luthier take a look at it? Iāve had one guitar plekād by SCGC, and it was an amazingly good setup – but Iāve also had Stephen Strahm and Bruce Sexauer each do very light, quick adjustments to a couple other guitars, and the playability improvement was incredible, and I donāt believe the full plek treatment would have made them noticably better. Now, if I needed some new frets, and had some fretboard issues, Ā maybe nut & saddle work, thatād be the perfect time to get everything dialed in, but otherwise –
I mean, why rebuild the engine if you only need a new set of plugs?
For our more norcal members, sheāll be at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastapol on Mar 9 Ā and at the Sonoma County Bluegrass Festival on the 10th – Ā Iām looking forward to seeing them at both shows!!
Thats just soooooo pretty!!
On the short scale, you light consider the medium tension too – depends on how you play, but on the short scale the low tension can almost feel too soft for anything but fingerstyle –
EIR /Sitka is such an under appreciated combo, and in the hands of SCGC, it makes such an incredible musical instrument – Ā Thats really a keeper!
I think they used to show special ordered, or unusual guitars, as well as uncommon standard models, all that were not made for a specific customer, in the just shipped area. They also had a list of all the official Santa Cruz dealers, which would link you to the dealers sites. There, you could usually search that dealers specific inventory for Santa Cruz instruments. I don’t think they ever maintained a complete and up-to-date listing of all guitars available, as that would be a pretty time consuming task tracking inventory out at every dealer. At least, I never saw it –
However, if there is a specific model you were looking for, I bet that Carolyn could give you a good idea of which dealer might have that guitar in stock, or maybe on order –
Now that we have a forum back up and getting the word out to SCGC lovers, we’ll have to put together a BBQ party in Santa Cruz and all try to get together again! Maybe this summer?
Well – Happy Birthday at ya!
And did I miss the pictures of the Tree OM?? Probably wouldn’t hurt to post a few more anyway –
Oooh! Is that a special new SC? One body, 4 necks?
You are always welcome to play any of my guitars, Matt! Weāll find a time soon!
One thing to keep in mind is that there are a number of different āfiguresā one sees in wood from the tree, and I think there have also been a number of high figure or quilted mahogany that is promoted as āTreeā material, although its hard to be 100% positive it is. The different figures have different properties, and all can be challenging to work.
While any āTreeā wood is good, what probably sets your guitar apart is the expertise appled by the luthiers at SCGC –
Good to know that beautiful F has found an appreciative home – after trying a few different all mahogany guitars from SCGC, Iāve settled on a wonderful ā29 OM that has the balance I wanted between body size, and tonal response. So far, the SCGC light tension strings have been great, and I find they give the guitar a nice sparkle on the high end, and a full, responsive bass at the same time. I would be intrigued to try the medium tension on it, but these strings last so long, I know if I change them out I have to live with them for a few months at least, and Iām not really inclined to change something I like –
