Richard Hoover is the soul of Santa Cruz Guitars and Carolyn Sills is the heart.

Great podcast Richard and Tad. Great insight into the continuing adaptation of the Homo Sapian 6 string picker.

      Really well done.

I would never disagree with the records of SCGC and the keeper of same, the wonderful Carolyn Sills……but I am the lucky owner of a 2016 1934 braz./Adi with a Braz fingerboard and your fingerboard looks “a lot ” like mine does. But, I have never seen unstained Ebony.

I will be interested in the outcome of your question.

Marklp’s question reminds me of a conversation I had with Mr. Hoover when I was specking the 34 .

We were talking about the End Voice that the guitar would have with the MOP binding  Vs. other materials ( Mr. Hoover says it does) and we started discussing the fingerboard material and how it affects the voice/tone of an instrument. Richard indicated that the Braz fingerboard would lend itself to help produce a very clear and “Grand Piano” voice whereas a Ebony fingerboard might not contribute as much.

As I was looking for a loud , clear , yet rich voice with great sustain, I went with the Braz fingerboard and bridge.

Some of you have played my 34 Zorro…. I think we achieved our goal

Mr. Hoover has always said that every component/ material affects the final outcome……..

Excellent quote….for both sides of the spectrum…..except for the fact that we are a Representative Republic Not a democracy.

” But no matter who plucks the strings it’s the fingering of the notes that make the tune.”

          I JUST MADE THAT UP……..Love and respect Y’all .

A large part of the reason I have then in a display case is ‘I just love the look of the end result artistry of the joining of wood and steel and stain .”

if I want to play a particular guitar I don’t have to search through cases stacked in a closet…..just open the corral gate and throw on the saddle…..

Some times at night I’ll turn on the cabinet lights and sip a glass and look at them….. it brings me joy…..it’s a sickness I know ,but I’m old and I don’t care what anyone else thinks……..well except my compadres on this Forum.

I would just like to say….You three old farts sound like the Conservative Men’s Club gathering on the courthouse bench in some small town bemoaning what has become of the world you once knew……I loved it and could not agree with Y’all more……..Age and responsibility cannot be denied……That was fun.

Jamkc….. I also am an “Old Fart ” (73)….while I have only played a few Fireflys’ I can tell you that I don’t believe any builder does Maple better than SCGC…NO ONE. But, as has been said here often the top wood is the determining factor to a guitars voice.

We who have older hands I believe ,contrary to conventional wisdom ,are less bothered by nut width because we are aware  of the old saw “adapt or die”…. we understand the concept better than most.

My old Martin and other of my SCs are 1-11/16…..spend a little time with it and you’ll be fine.

I have tried and tried to record with Dee…but I just can’t be involved if a “Click Track ” has to be used , and now days it always is . The link here is a recording we did some years ago and I’m playing my old Martin HD-28 . They were able to remove the click track from my head phones  when we recorded . Dee and I have done this song so many times that I was on auto pilot as to the timing….but that is a rare thing .
