Its good to hear your experience with a mahogany F – I had an all mahogany F, but it didn’t ring my bell. I was searching for a replacement for a ‘29 000, and the F just wasn’t the sound I was looking for. Every FS I’ve seen has been eir,  and almost every FTC has been maple. There was one of the 40th anniversary FTCs in mahogany, which I only tried briefly and lightly, and couldn’t say I was overwhelmed with it (it was VERY pretty, though) and I got a few minutes with the FTC in granadillo that went to NAMM, and that I was EXTREMELY taken by.  Unfortunately, the back of an FTC tales about same amount of material as the backs of 3 regular guitars, so its not likely they’ll make many in the more exotic woods.  My 12 string F in walnut is fantastic to my ear – its a very warm and musical 12 string – and I’m pretty sure that thicker walnut blanks would be more easily available for an FTC, but I don’t know if the walnut would have the right tonal characteristics for a carved back. Maybe Richard has already tried it –

But the rest of the FTC is pretty much normal, so there are all the usual options for tops, fretboards, inlays and other decorations – and the maple is a beautiful material that takes toners and stains really well, so you could do some really cool things – Theres a maple archtop I love thats got an incredible emerald green stain thats absolutely gorgeous. And I’ve seen a picture of the same model in an azure blue thats probably just as nice.  A little custom binding, some nice dyed inlay material, it could really be quite sweet.

An FTC would make an incredible canvas to create a really special and unique guitar – the hardest part would be deciding on the details that would make it uniquely yours, but Richard would be the perfect person to advise and help make that happen.

I’m sorry to say that I’ve spent way too much time playing Fs and FTCs, and I completely understand the emotional involvement in the decision.  They are wonderful guitars, and Richard can do some wonderful things with them.  I have Fs in maple, eir, and koa, and F-12s in maple and walnut. As you must know from your maple F,  they have a nice balance with a strong midrange, and just look sexy as hell –

The FTC shares much of that, but the carved back brings an edge and focus to the tone thats kind of like an archtop, but still has some of the balance and character of a flat top.  I hope to have more insite soon –   ?

I was gonna say that adding tunnel 13 to the Tree and having it done by Santa Cruz might be like making a dessert with home made brownies and hand churned ice cream and gourmet caramel and special sprinkles – that you can actually get too much of a good thing. But then I saw this video and realized I was full of cr@p –

          Go for it!

Have you tried a different browser? Thus forum is the easiest and most straight-forward site I’ve bern to to post pictures – (except maybe eBay – )

Its the one reason I always try to bring a guitar with me when I travel – never have thoughts about entertaining anyone, but no matter where I am or what is going on, if I can get a little time to myself with a guitar, my day is definitely better –

I’ve looked at a number of Fenders, and mostly what I hear is that you need to crank them up, or maybe I should say run them at higher levels, to get the tone out of them. So as much as I’d love a larger amp, I don’t really want to have to  crank it way up,  so I’m imagining that a 15w or so is all I probably want.  But I am still trying to grok it all –

And I’m not just thinking just acoustic – my next great hope is to find a thinner body, hollow or semi-hollow, arch top or jazz kind of guitar. I’ve been tempted by a few, but still trying to figure out what I would really use and bond with. Certainly can’t buy a number of them, like I’ve done with flat tops –  and when I’m looking at slightly wider necks, the options aren’t that many –

Ok – lemme bring this thread back for a moment –

I have a Mesa Subway Blues amp – its pretty nice for an electric guitar amp, but I’m not enjoying it with an acoustic in it. I also have the Schertler, which is a great super clean amp, but I’m thinking about a Fender Blues Jr – seems like it might be in that middle spot, where it’d do a good job as a clean amp, but also be able to get some drive out of it with an electric – all without being crazy heavy or too loud for most small gigs –

                    thoughts?

I’m kinda resurrecting an old thread here, but I’ve had a chance to play a couple guitars that Bruce Sexauer recently made from the Tree stock, and there is definitely something above and beyond the normal mahogany there – but I still think it takes alot of special attention to bring that into a special instrument. Its clear to me Bruce can do it, and I have to believe that Richard is someone who could as well – gotta get a chance to play a SCGC Tree OM one of these days – preferably sooner than later  –

Yowsuh!  One of my 2 Davis & Wells 20” – I found this one in great shape, but 3 ph, and it was so cheap I couldn’t pass it up. Just added a VFD and got it running sweet. One of these is gonna get a Driftmaster  resaw fence like your friend has, and hopefully make a small shop resaw as nice as his!

First, I don’t think we worry about growing our forum too fast – if we do a good job with our content and attitude, and each of us keep telling others about it, it will grow in membership.

We can work more on content, and one of the things I would love to see on this forum would be to have more of the shop news, dealer news, artist news, history stories or experiences –  maybe we could get permission from the shop to post alot of the material thats going on FB onto this forum as well, and maybe add more guitar geek info to it, that may be considered un-interesting to the general population that frequent FB.

For ex – I love to hear about wood that Richard may have found, or perhaps new designs or styles they are working on.  Even if its gonna be a matter of months, or even years, before we see the guitars being shipped. Interesting customs, or odd repairs, or guitars that come back into the shop after years in the field. If dealers are ordering some interesting guitars with altered specs, or maybe just an intro to the dealerships, their history and how they work with SC. There are a number of great guitarists that could be featured, and we could help provide details about their tour schedules, CD releases, or backstory on their SC guitar. Forum members could post pics and info on older or unusual guitars they have, maybe some sound clips and history on unusual SC instruments – we could collect pics of SC ukes, or get sound clips from a Mandocello – I’m still intrigued with their acoustic bass – and maybe there are a couple of other things that have come out of the shop that would be interesting to put up some pics and info about.

I would love to change things so that rather than make Richard answer alot of questions, have them come into the forum and someone local can take Richard out to lunch and just ask him some questions that have come in, and write up a little blob about it all. I think a monthly piece “Lunch with Richard” would be a great thing –

The forum is a chance to put up stuff that doesn’t have a place on the SC official site, isn’t of general interest for FB (and is interesting to read a few years from now, while FB is so much more immediate). Its a place to collect history, random pics, songs, people, community – word will get out, and those who understand will join and participate. I like the idea of a special place, kinda like Bolinas – not hard to find and get to, but we don’t need slot of road signs pointing it out to everyone –

Thats just me – and I know it’ll take alot of work, and time, for it to all start to gel –

I have to say, posting pics on this forum is the one thing it does really well (other than attracting an abundance of good people, which this forum is pretty good at as well) –

For me, I just click the wiggly mountain picture, then the  icon at the left end of the source box, click on my photos, constrain the proportions to something reasonable, and boom! It just works! And all from my iPad –

Haha!  Yeah, the goatee is my rather lame attempt to appear more like a musician and cool dude, and less like a lecher and creepy old guy – can’t say it helps, but the wife isn’t too thrilled with it, so there gotta be something good there!

Alan wanted this to be a tool to get gigs, so every penny from this, (plus the gig before, and the next gig coming up) is gonna pay for the video guys, sound guy, and cover what the door didn’t make for the minimum club rental – heck, still worth it in my book –
