I may be incorrect here but ….a story.
I purchased a SCGC H model , an Otis Taylor Madi/Italian from Denver Folklore Center a few years ago. As a matter of fact it Was Otis Taylor’s main touring guitar and I have a letter from him stating so. In a telephone conversation with him he confirmed it.
The scale length is 25.375 the same as standard H models.
I purchased the guitar while in Boulder, Co. for my Niece’s wedding. She had asked my wife and I to sing “Wagon Wheel” as the bride and groom departed the ceremony …..I don’t know why …but she is my favorite Niece and I could not say no.
Anyway , I brought the guitar back to Boulder and decided to replace the Light guage strings with SCGC Medium tension set.
As I was tuning the medium set to 440 I experienced the worst sound I have heard since the “Dreaded incoming”.
The Bridge split and separated from the body along with the under saddle P/U and six strings with an explosive bang that I still hearto this day.
I looked at Dee and she was in the same shock I was.
I called the owner of D.F.C. and he said bring it back and the would send it to the Mothership for repair at no cost to me….it was repaired and sent to me in Florida several weeks latter.
Moral Of Story……The O.T . gets ONLY Lite Tension strings.
If I were you I would think about an F model….they can take heavier strings….but I think they are MUCH better with Lites……FWIW, IMHO , ETC , ETC.
Paul,….I always look forward to your “educated ear” comments regarding SCGC builds.
I mean no disrespect to any of our forum members ,past or present, but I feel like my small collection covers a whole lot of the SCGC story and I would not, could not, part with any of them.
Thanks Bert , it’s obviously 2 different voices and both are wonderful. Hog is Hog and Rosie is Rosie.
So much for those who claim that there is no “real” difference in tone woods.
Three of my best ….LOL
Indeed…indeed……..Maybe , maybe I could learn the rhythm guitar chords……maybe.
Sorry…I meant Big Mon !!
Matt S.,what is Big Mom ?
Well with the start of “Rainy Season” and the arrival of the 12 string I’m working on some iconic 12 string tunes.
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Tambourine Man
Annie’s Song
Walk Right In
Betty and Dupree
Playing using my ” 60 year bad habit unique to me “combo strum/thumb picking……working out pretty well.
How about Y’all ….new tunes ?
My entire Ramuda was watching and listening from their corrals. I unison and loudly they asked…. “Why the Hell can’t you ride us like THAT ?”
Wonderful Tad , thanks….But I think that would be a tough act for the “Elmwoods “to follow…..
Yep……Y’all don’t need to sign up ….just donate to the cause……..I’m going to win the OM…..LOLOLOL
Bert…beautiful…..I missed those pix also……..HOGMAN Bert should be your new handle. Great old blues moniker.
I have to say that SCGC instruments have their own unique voicing….neither Gibson or Martin . That I think it the greatness of Mr. Hoovers concepts of luthiery. His statements that he derived his construction methods from the masters of violin creation and his unique vision of sonic energy I think has made his guitars seperate from all others…at least to my old ears.
I remember when I decided to enter the world of high end guitars I did so with no preconception of who was “Better” than another.
It was quite by karma that I found a used S.C. Da-1 at Guitar Center in ft. Myers, Fl..
It was hanging way up on the wall among Martins and Gibsons and Taylors . I asked the sale guy about it and he said “I don’t know anything about it , but I think it’s made in California “.
I had been trying out the high end models of the “big three” and then I played the Santa Cruz.
It voice was unlike anything else I had played….I mean REALLY different. I knew then that I had found the Truth….as I perceived it. That Santa Cruz sound is distinct and original.
Daniel,
I find as I am approaching what some people consider ‘Old Age” that I can center my thoughts on what I consider to be “truths”. Facts, I have learned , are subject to interpretation , ….but Truth is simple and incontrovertible.
The voices of my Santa Cruz guitars show me truths…..my shortcoming in technique and my occasional flashes of musical inspiration……both of which are humbling and inspiring at the same time.
That they are beautiful also is just a plus.
Never ,ever quit looking for truth.
I think a 53….but could be 1 year either way
Well to quote the “Men On Film” segment on the old “In Living Color show….Hated It !!!
I would restring with the SCGC Lites tomorrow but Dellinor -Wiggins State Park beach is open tomorrow and it one of the prettiest beaches in Florida and we are a short bike ride away.
Unless all I ever want to play is the intro to “Hotel California “( and the Nashville tuning is perfect for that ) I’ve had my experiment with Nashville tuning.
Way too High Hat brilliant for my ear. The O.T. had wonderful sustain but no soul or depth with these strings
Also working with those strings is like tying knots on a 6 weight fly line…at least for these old hands and eyes.
I broke the D string just about an inch and a half beyond the tuning peg and it took me at least 10 minutes to wind on enough to bring it up to tune. I used a Hemostat and and a lot of sweat and and swear words. !!!
SOOOO….I guess I need to find an inexpensive…but decent quality 12 string to Play with.
