Tremendous guitar, thanks for the photos. I had an outstanding experience at SCGC with Richard when I went to take the tour and order my first guitar. I took my current favorite guitar and after I played a bit Richard asked me, “What do you like about it? What would you change?” Simple, but useful questions. Due to COVID-19 I’m still waiting for the the guitar to be completed, but I’m confident it will be outstanding!
Did the Eric Skye 30 Day Challenge. Currently taking Mark Goldenberg’s Chord Theory course at Peghead Nation. Great content clearly explained. Not sure if it is still going, but Peghead Nation was offering the first month free.
Inspiring! 🙂
I have a terrible feeling that you’re speaking a lot of truth… I have to admit that I’m already intrigued by the Model F as well.
Thank you, it has already been amazing experience so far!
Thanks for all the input. I ended up ordering a custom 00 with scale length and body depth of the Skye and a Sinker Redwood and Figured Mahogany combo. Richard guided me in the selection of the tonewoods so I have no doubts it’ll sound great!
I’m in the same boat, I just placed my order for a custom 00 with the scale length and body depth of the Skye, but with a Sinker Redwood top. It’ll be a longer wait, but I’m sure it will be worth it. For me, it will be my first SCGC guitar!
March 11, 2020 at 8:50 pm in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break Lunch with Richard Hoover #8 Guitar tops part 2 #3953Not sure if this is the appropriate way to do this, but I have a suggestion or two for other topics I would love to see on the “Coffeebreak.”
– Could we get some more info on bracing? Ie. Difference in regular spruce v adi braces? Effect of hide glue? Advanced bracing? Tapered v scalloped? I feel like this is a huge area of confusion for me and erroneous information in general.
– How big an impact does guitar size and shape have on the playing style and/or music that is played on a particular instrument? Ie. Bluegrass instruments seem to be (almost invariably) dreadnoughts, “fingerstyle” guitars are often mid or smaller body styles. Is this set in stone? Given that SCGC does so much custom work and has so much skill and experience does Richard feel these stereotypes apply to SCGC guitars?
Anyway, love the podcasts and looking forward to more amazing “Coffeebreak” content in the future.
Thank you for all your hard work.March 3, 2020 at 2:58 am in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break Lunch with Richard Hoover #8 Guitar tops part 2 #3905Another great episode, thanks for all the great content. Just ordered my first SCGC guitar and went with a Sinker Redwood top, I can hardly wait!
Good suggestion Re: meeting with SCGC. I’m actually going to be visiting SCGC later this week for a tour and sone time with Richard; I’m sure he’ll guide me in the right direction.
That’s interesting you mention that, I’ve been thinking a Redwood top and Mahogany back and sides H-13 would be a pretty cool combination.

I’m hoping that Pt. 2 will provide a little more info in Redwood. Specifically, are Redwood and Sinker Redwood much different sonically? As a native Northern Californian I’ve always been a sucker for Redwood.
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll give that model a look as well.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience, very useful information.
Thank you so much for your input, I’m definitely looking forward to customizing it to the extent my budget will allow.
