Wonderful interview, I could listen to Joe all day!
May 21, 2022 at 2:32 am in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break #42 Zooming’ with Richard Hoover Guitar Care #7320So useful, and I’m glad Richard will be bringing back the wax as I love the smell of it!
What a joy Carolyn was to work with, her heart, humor and knowledge will be dearly missed. Fortunately I live in Northern California so I’ll be able to catch her and Gerard at a Combo/Poi Rogers show in the not too distant future!
Welcome Will!!!
Thanks. Yes, you may be right, I may in fact be waxing it too often. I do treat my SCGC 00 with a great deal of loving care as it is an amazing instrument and likely to be the only SCGC I’ll ever be able to have made… barbering is good trade but not good enough to be a collector of fine instruments. 🙂
I don’t play with too much aggression but I do split my time 50/50 between strumming and fingerpicking. Carolyn mentioned another recommended product, but I like the “leather” scent of the SCGC wax. It was funny, when I went to tour and design my guitar I just brought some beard wax to Richard as a gift because I thought he might like the woodsy scent. He, of course, being so generous couldn’t let me leave empty handed. : )
Thanks for the info and suggestions.
Thank you, will do.
I’m horribly envious, but, no, I don’t blame you one bit. Congrats!
Wow, amazing story. My SCGC custom 00 is based on the dimensions of the Skye model and you’ll be astounded by the versatility. Congratulations!!!

March 18, 2022 at 5:40 pm in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break #38 Zoomin’ with John Stubbings #7101Excellent podcast. John is so engaging and seemingly has an inexhaustible supply of wonderful stories. I loved his book and I’m looking forward to the next one.
Here’s my quick Wish List for future episodes:
Carolyn Sills and Gerard: I’d love to get their perspective not only about working at SCGC, but also what the last couple years have been like for them as professional musicians. I know Carolyn has been on, but I still think this could be interesting.
Someone from Calton Cases. Why a flight case is useful and how they do it.
A longtime SCGC luthier/employee just to hear what brought them to SCGC, why they continue, how Richard imparts his philosophy.
Richard Hoover… always and anytime!
Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for working so hard to keep us all safe. Much appreciated.
Thank you. Like everyone else I can get fixated on guitar specs, tonewoods, etc. but this was a great reminder of how sometimes the best thing about a guitar is the people it connects us with and how wonderful it is to express what is in the heart via 6 strings.
Congrats on the new guitar, what a beauty!
