After I spent time and money getting the intonation right (saddle needed to be moved as the bridge was misplaced), it was a nice guitar. Very fundamental and direct. I suspect it would have been an excellent stage guitar.
Guilds are built like tanks, so I bet your F will have a lot more complex tone than my Guild did. ButSitka and maple are a lovely combination. Maple is underused in guitars if you ask me. [Said the mandolin player.]

In a good way.

Pretty sure mine would, yes.

Hi Richard and all,
Yes, I use an armrest on my Vessel mandolin. It’s held on the instrument with the same clamp that they use on violin chin rests. But that won’t work for guitar. They don’t make big enough clamps!
I used a black plastic John Pearse on my Guild G-37 before I sold that to Chad Manning.
The adhesive strip in the armrest did zero damage to the finish, though I have no idea what Guild was using for finishes in 1975.
Hope that helps!

Rich,
It’s actually not all that uncommon. People let their hair down here once in a while. I’ve been to jams at pubs/cafés wherein the proprietor locks the door after the official closing time and we all just keep playing as long as the party is going.
Much like California, this is a very special place. Though, like California, it’s often easier for someone new to see how special it is. You are welcome to come to France and experience the life any time.

Doc Watson toured with a Fender Twin.
Tad, if you go with an amp designed for electric guitar, get one with a lot of headroom (power before the signal starts to break -up because a stage of the amp is being overdriven). The signal from a pickup designed to amplify an acoustic instrument is generally broader than an the signal from an electro-magnetic pickup. The extra power keeps things cleaner.
I use a DI box or an Orchid Electronics pre-amp and go straight to the board when I’m gigging acoustics, especially if it’s my octave mandolin or an acoustic guitar. Easier to let the sound guy manage it than tweak things on stage.
One of the reasons I’ve gone to electro-magnetic pickups and an amp for my mandolin playing is the fact that most sound guys here in France have zero idea what a mandolin should sound like. Having my own gear allows me to be in control of the sound.
Is that something you need?

I played the very rough mix for Claudine last night. She’s happy with my pronunciations. I’m happy with the vocal and rhythm tracks. Not happy with the emando tracks.
We spent a couple hours flailing about with the JBovier and the Arrow. This is because I had not considered before-hand what to do with them. My ears were asking for a telecaster, but I had left it at home!
I took 6 instruments, a pedal board, an amp, and a gear bag. On the way out the door I looked at the Tele and thought: Nahhhh. (D’oh!)
The proprietor/engineer of Le Studio de la Ville Basse is Remi Hiblot. He’s a drummer and in a band called Sweet Scarlet. His wife is the singer, his brother the bass player, and his dad is the guitar player. (His mom is a percussionist and surplus to requirements I guess!) Remi’s English is limited to a couple phrases. He cracked me up with his impression of an English-speaker speaking French with English pronunciations. My French is BAD. (Ever seen the Monuments Men? My French is no better than Mat Damon’s.)
Instruments used:
- SCGC custom Dreadnought (42BluegrassD)
- Paul Hathway OM-1 (octave mandolin)
- JBovier EMC-5, (5 string emando)
Instruments taken but not used:
- Arrow G5 5 string emando
- Vessel F5 mandolin
- Mix F5 mandolin
Instruments not taken that might have been useful
- Fender Squier Telecaster (1982)
Hmmm… I may have to remove the “mandolinist” from my email sig file.

Don’t know. I haven’t tried!

I’d hate to disagree. 😉
If you do a search for the song, you get maybe three or four French versions and then a whole pile of German versions as done by rough looking medievalists. Entertaining. 🙂
Musically at this point I’m just hoping to get the cadences right in the French lyrics. “J’en ramenerai plusier lingot” ain’t easy to sing.

Thanks Zorro!
In that pub, it would be an Old Speckled Hen. But no one would deny you a Guinness. 😉
Gerry Colvin (guitar) tends to drink white wine. Kim Ralls drinks whatever is going. And I prefer, when drinking properly, and a single malt Scotch of the Islay variety, preferably Macallan or Oban.

I’m warming up the coffee maker!
