      Here you go Richard:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Cwagr2XaqQ  If you’re into pedals, this guy is really good to watch.

An ME50?  I had to look that up.  🙂  Boss tries to do it all at once there!

I’m eyballing MXR phase 90s on Reverb.  LOL.

        Got another…

There’s a video of me out there playing the song I wrote for my daughter.  It was a Covid video, shot live in the dining room, and features interuptions from my son, Rémy, who was 5 or 6 at the time.

I’m playing my Arrow G5 5 string mandolin acoustic (sans amp) and there’s a glass of whisky in front of me.  I would have been Oban, 14 years old.

So there you go.  Arrow G5 spruce on maple with Oban.  🙂

I like my SCGC mahogany dreadnought with a nice Bordeaux (red):  St. Emelion, at least 5 years old.

          🙂

I have been enjoying Premier Guitar and Anderton’s Music’s NAMM videos (thought the guys at Anderton’s like crunch and distortion WAY more than I do 😉 ).  [Anderton’s is an excellent shop in London and their videos are very well done.]  Reliving my past NAMM experiences.  They were always loads of fun.  I miss it.

The main guy from Anderton’s (“The Captain”) has lost his voice from conducting interview after interview after interview in that insanely noisy environment.  Reminds me that I used to use the drive time home from LA to rest both my ears and my voice.  🙂

New tune: Midnight Blue by Kenny Burrell.

With this one, I think it would be easier to play on guitar.  The riffs are all about guitar fingering.  It’s not impossible to do on mandolin, but because the mandolin is tuned in 5ths, the hammer-ons and pulls-offs are done on the middle and ring fingers rather than the index and middle.  I’m seriously considering dropping string gauge quite a bit to make them easier!

Found a good lguitar esson on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vEVM_Ey3rU&t=1015s
I’m watching it for the tonal similarity and because the woman teaching the tune is really good at playing slowly.

Last night I went to class.  I’ve missed a few because Claudine is recovering from hip replacement surgery.
Despite practicing, I was utter rubbish. stumbling all over the fret board, trying to remember which scale to be soloing over at a given point in the song, trying knit together something listenable if not a coherent statement…

It’s truly humbling to consider yourself a musician and then run into a genre that kicks your ass everyday and twice on Sundays.

The dedication required to play this stuff well is impressive.  Not sure I have it.  But I have not given up yet…

So the holes are for jewels.  That’s cool.

I’m looking forward to the the photos.  🙂

The holes!   Those are new (to me).

Is SCSC going to srtart offering a propietary hanging system for display cabinets and walls?  (half joking)

Update:  We had something approximating real snowfall!
The missus and I went walking in it to help rehab her new hip joint (PT’s orders).  It was lovely, and now it’s gone.

It’s days like this that remind me how much I miss actual winter weather.

                        Hank,

I’m starting, at the age of 58, to understand why there are snowbirds.  😉

It’s -2C (about 28F) here tonight with a lot of wind and a few snow flurries.  Finally getting cold, but it won’t last long.

                        Fair winds,

                          Two thoughts.

                          1) “boutique” is a French word that means “shop”.  So when someone says ‘booteek’ in an American accent you can just translate in your head.  😉

                          2) The closest local music shop to me is in Soissons, about 30km away.  The closest good shop is in Compiegne, which is an hour away (and not an easy hour, like you have in CA). Jeez, I miss Gryphon, Sylvan, Eric Shoenberg’s place, Tall Toad, etc.  There is NOTHING like that here outside of Paris.  And even there, the shops are small and too specialised.

So I have been jonesing a decent shop here in Laon.  I envision a musical space where folks can come check out and buy guitars, strings, accessories, amps, get repairs done, jam, and see a concert.  Kind of like McCabe’s in LA.

We are a culture (or cultures) aching for ways to connect in person.  We just need to figure out how to do that without obligating the exchange money for the experience.

What has it been like on the keys Hank?

Here in northern Europe it has been warm, wet, and windy since early November.  My weather app hasn’t stopped saying “flood warning in effect through ___day 11:59pm” for at least a month.

The channel tunnel used by the Eurostar flooded.

I haven’t actually seen more than an hour of sun in a looong time.

We’re supposed to get cold weather this weekend, and some snow with a few clear days afterward would be nice.  But I am not holding my breath.

                            🙂

I haven’t been since 2011.  I went for several years as Richard’s guest and truly enjoyed it.  My favourite parts have always been the showcases.  Though I met, fell in love with, and later ordered a JBovier EMC-5 (5 string emando) at NAMM 2010.  I still have it, and still love it.

Product-wise it was hard to judge tone, except for large amps.  😉

ahh.  The late great David Crosby pre-liver replacement days.

Saw them on this tour in Hershey, PA.  He was so stoned I could tell from 30 rows back up in the stands.  But they sounded great.

The bit of commentary at the beginning from Stills isn’t wrong.  Apparently, he and Nash wanted to make a record, but the label didn’t want to promote anything unless it was all three of them.  So they had to drag Crosby away from his hobby.  Crosby contributed two songs to the album.

And they made a good pile from the result.
