+1 on the tapered X brace. My 2001 VJ has the same, good way to go. bert
Welcome to the forum mrbirdog, congratulations on the new SCGC OM.
SCGC Lights are fantastic, I also use D’Ad SX 12-53, which are very similar. The nano coating of either is great for me because I slide on the strings a good bit. The minimal squeak, without the dull tone of other coated brands is a real winner for me.
I favor fresh strings, either last about 4-5mos for me. The cost is a wash when compared to changing EJ16s every 4-5wks in my case. best wishes, bert
Well, you know what they say Matt…. ‘when you start warbling and your cheeks start flapping, it’s time to fine tune.’
🙂 bert
Thanks Tad, best overall description of baritone guitar I’ve ever seen. The SCGC Parabolics sound awesome. bert
Man, that’s a peach. I’m sure it plays/sounds better than it looks. 🙂
Don’t get too upset with the keymaster, he does a fantastic job keeping things straight around here. bert
Best wishes on your new H-13, congratulations on a lifetime guitar. bert
Hank,
you might call Righteous Guitars (678) 735-3115 and ask the guys who made the video. They are on the NW side of ATL and I’m on the NE side (hours drive), don’t really know anybody there but, they are a friendly bunch is the word from a good friend who trades there.
note: you may want to try the new D’Ad SX strings, much like the Parabolics but diff, they are on 3 of my guitars at this time and :). bert
Thanks for the link Daniel. The fundamentals of mahog always seem to get my vote. bert
October 7, 2021 at 2:52 pm in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break #32 Zoomin’ with Mike from Sylvan #6438Thanks Rich for the Sylvan podcast. Sylvan came along a good while after I was living in Santa Cruz, CA. In 1977, I bought a Martin D18 from the Music Box on Walnut Ave, in the early days of SCGC when Mr Hoover was doing a good bit of luthier work.
I was playing with a couple guys all the time, one day I mentioned that I didn’t like the D18s setup. Guy said let’s take it to Richard, he’s the best in the area. We went over there and he was right.
Loved the podcast as Mike told the story of how Sylvan came into it’s own. Great success story as things come and go over time. Managing a small business is a very demanding effort and hat’s off to Sylvan. bert
Nope, don’t know a thing about that thing. Maybe a new angle for schredders. Bet it would sound outrageous with my old wha wha pedal. hee

September 24, 2021 at 1:29 am in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break #30 Zoomin’ w/ Richard Hoover 45 yrs of SCGC History #6385Thanks once again Rich and Tad for a very thoughtful discuss of SCGC with Richard. After I left Santa Cruz ~`1980, I kinda lost touch with SCGC for about 20yrs. Then one day I played a SCGC Tony Rice, it came home with me and became my primary guitar for 6yrs.
SCGC has been near and dear to me since Richard tweaked my D18 in ~1978, Catching up on the years from Richard is such a treat for me. In this Podcast Richard mentioned Francis’ “parted-hair” headstock and told the story how that evolved and why he stopped using that style. Loved his candor on this topic.
Richard and I are about the same age and I really appreciate his perspective on the future.
Here is my cease and desist headstock, hee: bert aka Francis

I was able to use my son’s camcorder and thanks to Tad I got er done. bert
After owning a few Euro spruce guitars and red spruce, Euro is my favorite… especially with mahog.
That guitar is gorgeous and just reeks of ‘play me’. congratulations Paul.
best wishes, bert
Thanks Tad, I sent you a PM to see if we can work this out with a phone call as you suggested, I’ve got a fresh pic.
Back in the late 70s when I left Santa Cruz, I went to work for HP out of Palo Alto and wound up moving a few times. As a UNIX guy I bought my first PC wit the arrival of Win 7. My new DAW and office computers are Intel 11th generation… it’s true, I’ve run test. They will do a minute in 30 seconds.
My brother stayed here for 6mos last year while having medical treatment. He had his head in his iphone all day long, not me… enough of that, just give me a call when you’re ready. We’ll record my birthday greetings. always grateful to you and Rich for all you do. bert
