Don’t know about the Newtones…. but, if you’re in the mood to try something….
I just bought a mix of Curt Mangan Lights/Meds, round core etc.
I’ve used them before and plan to put a set of round core lights on the VJ at the next change.

Shari711, welcome to the forum. SCGC 1929-00, how sweet it is. best wishes, bert
Frank Sanns is the man at the Collings Forum, this is his current thread. I always went by ‘armdog’ on the Collings forum and posted on this thread. El Lambo (Eric) is the admin and added his thoughts. We’re not alone in this dilemma.
Matt, I was just reading on the latest version of the Collings Forum… they are having the same issues. The Facebook site for Collings is thriving apparently, I’m not on Facebook. Looks like the world is passing us by or something, but I’ll go kicking & screaming before I join Facebook. dunno, bert
Taylors are voiced for their ES2 electronics, no boomy bass is their forte. For most unplugged acoustic players, they are not first choice. Their new Grand Pacific models are the latest attempt to attract acoustic players, they got out of the pure acoustic only market ~2008.
I picked up a 2007 GA5 acoustic last year as a kick-around, traded it recently for a Furch walnut/sitka OM, came to my senses, one of my better moves. 🙂

Why we love SCGC.
wreck500, welcome to the forum, fortuitous to have another VJ owner, congratulations:
I’ve often said that if I could only play 10 songs, 7 would sound good on my Bourgeois, 8 would sound good on my Collings, but….. all 10 would sound great on my 2001 VJ. Warmest, sweetest guitar I’ve ever owned. lifetime guitar.
You went to the right place in ATL, I’ve known the Petsch family for many years. best regards, bert

My main guitar for 6yrs. I’ve never played one lick of bluegrass but my SC Tony Rice was like it’s namesake, very very special and went everywhere with me. Tony’s version of ‘Early Morning Rain’ has been my fav since forever… oops, sorry Gordon. facts is facts as Dizzie Dean used to say:

Happy New Year to everyone. Thanks a bunch for bringing SantaCruzGuitarPlayers forum to life.
Hope 2019 brings peace and happy to all. bert
tad, this is the only recording I’ve made with the El Rey 4 at present. It had on NYXL 12-52 (wound third).. I have since changed to NYXL 11-50BT (unwound 3rd), me like. The 52s made it sound too throaty and the unwound 3rd really shines.
I recorded it clean with a Shure SM81 positioned about 2ft from the Amp, added a bit of reverb & EQ in the post. I’ve had the ER4 for two months and still bumping around with EQ.
The ER4 is a true hybrid, got acoustic covered… in between an archtop and thinline elec. Otto D’Ambrosio is not afraid to experiment, he build Julian Lage’s archtop amongst other things and he’s now working full time out of Eastman US headquaraters in Pomona.
I took a chance and bought mine online, good fortune happens.
Rich, thanks for the Oates link. Unfortunately, I am not a facebook’er.
I put on my first set of D’Ad PBs in the late 70s when I was living in Santa Cruz. My playing buddy said, you’ve got to try these. Always try diff brands but always come home to Jim D’Addario’s strings. bert
Neil Young’s house in Malibu is gone plus many others not so well known, please rain.
BR, welcome to the forum.
All of the suggestions above are worthy. I do not like Martin Monels, bang! However, I have started using D’addario Nickel Bronze on one of my guitars that was very stiff sounding and bingo. Just have to try things, every guitar is different. best regards, bert
zorro, you”ve got some very good rhythmic chops. All three guitars sound excellent with you driving. I understand how you feel, sometimes it can be daunting. About 20 years ago I joined a songwriters group that featured a number top amateurs and pros, shaking like an ice cube on my first go. It does get better as you move along.
thanks for the cool tunes, bert
Does Santa Cruz art count, one of my wonderful memories from my 3yrs in Santa Cruz:
