He is right. That other forum is notorious for modifying and deleting posts by whatever rubric they happen to be adhering to on that particular day. They are so intent on political correct speech and niceness that they’ve actually become quite tyrannical and oppressive.

One of my Santa Cruz guitars is mahogany-backed. While it’s certainly not from the tree, it too sounds less like mahogany than other guitars made with the same materials. I don’t know if that’s because of the Adirondack top or the way it’s constructed. It has a really warm, deep tone to it. It’s not airy or woody per se. like hog tends to be; it’s more toneful, resonant and deep like a rosewood-backed guitar. If I were to compare it to a rosewood-backed guitar in a blind test (before I ever played it because I know what it sounds like now) I have my doubts that I could pick it out from rosewood-backed guitars. This guitar has a tone that reaches down into your soul.

I think that whether you go with EVO or SS you will be happy that you likely will never have to worry about frets again. I remain extremely happy with my SCGC 00 that got the SS frets. I’d do it again without hesitation. I’ve heard that EVO has a slight gold color to it, you should be aware of that in case such things are a concern to you.

Each guitar I have inspires something unique in me. This is something that comes when you can hear and appreciate the different tones each guitar produces. It’s also a joy to find something new a particular guitar excels at. And SCGC guitars are particularly adept at inspiring improvisation. Have you tried a variety of alt. tunings too?

Thanks for the responses. I’ve sussed out which pins go where and all is good.

Thanks, Tadol. I’ll try to do that soon. I think one of the larger pins is on one of the unbound strings though. I’m gong to swap strings again soon so I’ll re-check everything. I’m not really loving the DR Rares I have on it now.

Maybe this was a manufacturing snafu? It really is kind of puzzling.

I bought a SCGC OO off eBay a few months ago and got a surprise when I opened the case seeing divots in the first nine frets. The divots were bad enough to affect intonation and my ability to properly fix the action. Normally I’d ask the seller to take back a guitar under such circumstances but instead I had it re-fretted.

I asked the same questions you did and eventually, with a little knot of worry in my stomach, got it re-fretted with stainless steel. The folks who did it were huge proponents of SS and convinced me to do it.

Some people had voiced concern that SS imparts a “ping” or a “zing” to notes when fretted, others do not hear this. I do not hear this. In my own case I feel I made the right decision and the tone of this guitar not did not decline, but is in fact better than before.

I cannot address the core of your question as completely as I’d like since I’ve only done this recently. I notice zero wear at this point. For comparison, one of my other guitars, a Martin 00-28, now shows just a tiny bit of fret wear and I have not played it significantly more than the SCGC. Once it’s to the point where it has divots it’s getting SS too.

We need a better acoustic forum and this can be it. I can’t imagine Silly Mustache getting banned on AGF, he’s the nicest darn guy there! I was banned once and have been threatened again.

And yes, they do moderate and delete PMs on AGF.

Maybe a few guitar magazines could mention this new forum. I’ll see what I can arrange along those lines.

Well hello there, Silly. Glad to find you here. I was kind of missing your posts over at AGF. I left that site too, for the same reasons you did. I’m not sure what’s happening over there but phew, the pettiness and draconian adherence to the most sterile language and topics only is disheartening. I got in trouble over four posts all on the same day, none of which would cause a raised eyebrow elsewhere. I’m a nice guy, I love people and I love to talk and joke around, is that so bad? Oh well. Let’s see if we can promote this site and get things rolling more here.
