My first one – the OM – was pre-broken-in and it was pretty perfect then and it’s only gotten better.
The 00-29 sounded AMAZING the first time I picked it up, and, like the other, it has improved over time, gradually. In addition to being acoustically great, it sounds better with the pickup now than when it was first installed – it’s warmer. I think the bits have all begun to get on better and relax, making it big and warm for such a small guitar.
I think that’d be lovely – although using the paua everywhere might be too much of a good thing. I wonder whether SCGC could do the deco inlays in a combination of paua and white MOP? That’d be colorful and eye-catching.
Zorro, because of the CITES ban, it’s dangerous to carry *any* rosewood instrument across transnational borders. Since most customs inspectors really don’t have the training to tell braz from indian from coco from madrose, inappropriate seizures happen more than they should. I have an instrument I would like to deliver to its *real* owner but I’m afraid to get it there bc it has a braz head plate.
Though in terms of braz carved instruments, though, Kim Walker did one – it’s apparently quite an instrument:
Archtop Aesthetics: The birth of the Kim Walker Solo Novo guitar
Permission to board, Cap’n?
Since the FTC is (to my mind) all about the warmth of a flattop and the clarity and cut-through-the-mix of an archtop, I’d go with spruce – probably sitka – for the top, and some really beautiful maple for the back and sides.
Deco inlays on an ebony board on a multi-piece maple neck (for structural stability) with some kind of light-colored binding and a clear finish would round it out. Not sure about purling and binding, but a 5- or 7-way multiply of ebony and figured maple would work.
Also, probably, a couple of tiny plates on either side of the inside of the soundhole (prob maple) to provide extra support for a magnetic pickup (I like the sound of Sunrise pickups in those instruments, but they’re kind of heavy).
That would be (IMHO) the perfect combination of aesthetics and function.
There are some FTCs in that list, too, right?
…..someday, I’m going to get one. They’re a great cross between a flat top and an archtop….
Where in Richmond?
Blue Snowball mic, under $50USD, on omnidirectional mode. Definitely airy and clear, and it plugs directly into your computer, so dead easy to use.
June 16, 2018 at 8:12 pm in reply to: I appears that someone forgot to cut the hole in the sound board strut that bloc #915The truss rod adjustment nut and hole are angled up, so you’ll need to use a 1/4” drive socket with an extension and aim it at the block at an upward angle. I think it’ s a 3/8” socket.
I’ve not seen an SCGC with a Martin-style hole in the brace.
Here are some inspection-camera pictures of an SCGC truss rod by Frank Ford:

I’m just at the point where a carved back FTC from Tree mahogany would be superfluous in the places I play, so I go with a simpler option. And the first FTC I ever played was dead plain maple (Neil at Los Gatos Guitar Gallery), and it’s why I love SCGC instruments….omg that was good, and the owner had decided not to sell it.
I’d settle for a plain maple FTC of any vintage 😉
I file notches in my pins so I know where they go – 1 for the first string to 6 for the sixth. Makes it easy, and in twenty-odd years they haven’t been put in wrong.

It was LOUD.
OMG, it was loud.
I remember thinking that I was going to have hearing damage if I kept playing it that hard.
Amazing, amazing guitar.
I’m in, too. Looking forward to Eric’s new music 😉
Definitely interested in attending a house concert.
I’m using a PUTW #54 soundboard transducer in my 1929 00 (though it does require an outboard pre). Sounds amazing IMHO and is pretty unobtrusive.
Before that I used a Sunrise magnetic, which plugged into just about anything and sounded good without a preamp, but which wa a little heavier….

Matt Hayden.
Thanks, Richard. I’ll come by. My fretboard tongues are usually a bit up or down…lots to learn, so I ask those who know 😉
The consensus seems to center on EVO, so I’ll probably get the next one fretted with that. Thanks for the advice!
