      Thanks gents!

For that tune I was going straight through the pedal board with nothing engaged and into a Marshall MG30CFX.  The Marshall was mic’d.

I use ONLY the clean channel on that amp.  The rest are rubbish.  But I crank both the gain and the volume all the way up and adjust the break-up by adjusting the master volume.  Julien thinks I play too loud. 😉

So when I go to chords, you can hear just a tiny little bit of overdrive.  I backed off a bit after the third chord so I wouldn’t step on Julien’s melody playing.

That particular emando has a Kent Armstrong humbucking pickup hanging on the end of the fretboard, and it’s fully acoustic in construction rather than chambered.  A real Jazz box.  So it was designed for as warm as sound as possible for a soprano instrument.  Which is all probably why it sounds Garcia-like.

Depending on the song I add some more overdrive, a bit of compression, a bit of mid-range EQ boost, or a straight boost.  When we play “Wish You Were Here” I use an octave pedal for the melody bits.

I get a Trey Anastasio sound when adding a bit of compression and overdrive.  🙂

I told my 5 year old, who has never had a Thanksgiving holiday, what it is.  He said, “How do we say it in French?”  “Bon Thasnkgiving!” I replied.

Alor… Bon Thanksgiving a tout mes amis Americain!

          Ahh, Bill.

I am indeed a wealthy man.  And bloody lucky.  It’s also nice to have such wonderful and appreciative friends, and to get to show them around Laon.  (First thought of those photos: “That’s a LOT of meat!”  Second thought: “My kids do like their hugs.”)

Laon is a special place.  Parisians sniff and look down their noses at this town and the surrounding villages.  But when fortification for a capital city was necessary, Laon was the capitol.  Not Paris.  You can’t throw rock without hitting something ancient and significant, and the rock itself was probably part of a wall or a street dating back 1000 years.

Hell I practice in a 16th century fortress with 3 foot thick internal walls!

The reparations and adjustments to Manoir de Breuil proceed.  We have some plumbing issues to resolve before tackling the ‘salle d’eau’ (shower room) and addressing repairs to any damaged joists and floor boards.

I don’t know if this is French plumbing practice or just bad plumbing in this house…  But the SVP lacks an upper vent.  So after about 4 flushes within a 6 hour period, the big ‘ol drain pipe up on the top floor suffers from equalised pressure and backs up!  Getting a new toilet and SVP tomorrow.

The kitchen drain (original to the house) was laid without a steep enough drop to the inspection hatch.  So it backs up easily.  We’re having that routed tomorrow and hoping a clean pipe is enough of a fix.  Otherwise it’ll require ground works!  (eek!)

Then… then… then… we’ll layout some real cash to have the shower room done properly.  At that point we’ll have two showers on the first floor and toilets on every floor.  When I have a completion date for the shower room Claudine and I will discuss dates for the guitar festival.

She’s totally on board!  We’re looking at room arrangements to maximise bed space.  I’ll be able to estimate short term guest capacity then.

Waverlys are great.  They beat most other tuners, open back or closed.

I suppose a drop of 3 in 1 oil every decade or so would be a good idea.  (I have Waverlys on my SCGC.  Bought it in 2002.  Never oiled them.  Hmmm.)

I recently put Rubners on a mandolin and I like them just as much.  Rubner was going through some production changes recently, but all guitar models are in production.

                Just had another thought…

Matt, do you remember Fran Guidry?  I think he’s still in Pleasant Hill.  He’s got a little home studio and would be a good guy to talk to about this stuff.

It is awful.  I got an engineer to do it for me.  Now he’s definitely a co-producer and pretty much my studio band.

If I were to start over and do a CD all by myself, I would do the following.

                  1) Set up the studio for one touch and/or remote operation.

                  2) Plan the song carefully.  Know what you want on it and set up the software for each track ahead of time.

                  3) When you’re ready to start putting music in the machine, get someone else to push the buttons (record, rewind, playback, etc.)

The idea is to set things up so you can change your ‘hats’ instead of trying to wear two at a time.  But knowing you, Matt, you’ve already thought of this.

                  😉

Without getting too controversial, I think you could make the case that PG&E could be guilty of arson through neglect.  The situation is absurd.  A power company shuts off power to keep from burning the state down because they failed to maintain their own power lines.  Indictments ought to be forthcoming.

Has anyone followed up on the cause of the Kincaid fire?  I recall PG&E saying they had a malfunction in the area where the fire started.

To be fair we have our own messes to deal with here.  I miss about 99% of the French news because we don’t have a television and my French is not good enough comprehend much of what is said.

Stay safe and sue PG&E.  🙂

From here it looks and sounds awful.  I miss California, but I’m glad we’re not going through any of that.  I lived in Sebastopol for 7 years.  I love that town, and it’s under evacuation notice.

Take care y’all and stay safe!

                        Well, phew!
The move went well, but it took too much effort to get the external insulation guys to finish up.

Also, the water heater and furnace both took longer than estimated to replace.  (I am not looking forward to that bill.  This was an unexpected expense.)  But as of yesterday we have both hot water and heat.  The EWI and the new windows are working like charms.  The house is warm & toasty.  No mean feat for the 1949 built large French house.

Kitchen and new bathroom are in as well.  So we can bathe properly.  (After the weekend I just had, this is a big deal.) One more bathroom needs to be refitted.  It was a re-purposed room I am suspicious of.  I think the shower has been leaking into the floor for a while.  There are rotted floorboards in an adjacent cupboard and stains on the ceiling in the dining room below.  So no showers there until it’s sorted.

As a small joke we are going to call it Manoir de Breuil.  (“Manoir” is a large house rather than a “chateau” which is equivalent to a castle. Though Chateau de Breuil sounds better.  “Breuil is pronounced ‘bruoy’.)

C and I stayed in a local cheapie hotel for one night last week.  I would not recommend Premier Classe in Laon.  We stayed in a no-smoking room and the smell of cigarette smoke wafted into our room all night.  Really unpleasant, and not much sleep.

                        Y’all are welcome, zorro!

I don’t know if we’ll have enough space for everyone.  But there are local hotels.  Look up Laon on Air BnB.  There are also gites, hereabouts.  Gites are self serve accommodations, like Air BnB but more official here in France.

We should start talking dates if there are enough takers.

Laon is quite small and not so well known as Reims.  But the cathedral here served as the model for both the Reims and Paris cathedrals.  Laon was fairly significantly behind German lines in both world wars.  So there’s less damage to this cathedral than the one in Reims.
Hitler visited here during WW2, apparently his unit served here in WW1.  I have seen a photo of him walking in front of the face of the cathedral (left to right if he were in the photo above).  It’s a bit weird to be in a place where he has been.  A disquieting feeling for an American.

Matt, you and Darie are welcome as soon as the bathrooms are done, the water heater has been replaced, and the furnace is back on.  🙂

If Stephen Strahm is still doing repair and set-up work, then I can think of no one better to take your guitar to.

I ahve two thoughts at this late date.

                              1) embrace the squeak.  I’ve heard a few times in recordings. It makes them sound authentically acoustic.

                              2) Use a set of strings with smaller winding wire or coated strings, like Elixirs.

73 or or 54 (me), it’s only when you stop learning that you get old.  🙂
