If you like the sparkly highs, controlled bass, and forward midrange character of a koa-topped 000, then I think redwood is a winner. Those are my two favorite top woods. Redwood being a little more lush. Koa seems to bring out the sound of the box more. But, the vibe is similar; dry bass with a rich top end that lets you have a “reverby” sound without getting muddy.
My 2021 sinker redwood 000 has “standard” mahogany but the back, sides, AND neck have a good bit of flame. I don’t know if they just happened to have a flamey standard mahogany or if I was lucky enough to get a free upgrade but I was blown away that this was their standard mahogany in 2021. The fact that they stained the mahogany to match the redwood top makes this one inspiring to pick up. Simply gorgeous.
Being that it’s a style 1, are you choosing that for blusey/dry tones, or for comfort? If it were mine, I’d go mahogany or walnut (I absolutely love walnut) for a dry tone. But, if it were just for comfort, I might want a more dense back wood to help the low-end fill out a bit more since it’s a smaller box.
Just my thoughts.
“SCGC who understands their market”
That’s really the key. You’ll notice that Richard never (from what I’ve seen) goes on about the super exotic woods being “better” necessarily, but that they do more of one thing or another.
I deal in audio products and there are some customers who simply want “the best”, regardless of price. I used to explain to them that there isn’t such a thing. That audio is personal and subjective. Then I smartened up and realized they aren’t shopping for an item, they’re shopping for an experience. So, I sell them the items that are rare and they can brag about online. Items that they can FEEL GOOD about. Because these aren’t tone hunters, they are treasure hunters.
The ornamentation is more than I would want in my instruments but I do respect the artistry and understand the importance of bringing eye-grabbing pieces to the trade shows. Nice to see the scrimshaw making an appearance!
Pleasantly chilly here in Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona. I love this time of year as I can spend hours every day working on the yard and garden in short sleeves.
Not bragging though as I’ll be holed up in the summer while folks in other states are out enjoying the weather.
January 10, 2024 at 1:47 pm in reply to: Beautiful Santa Cruz Tony Rice dreadnought in Brazilian Rosewood #8473I’ve seen at least a couple of these recently, in Brazilian. They don’t seem to be moving as guitars just aren’t selling well right now. I think people are expecting to get what they paid during the pandemic and it’s not going to happen.
