Thanks tadol. The problem with that is I like the scgc treble string “sparkle” and going with a different brand for the E would make buying scgs strings a waste for me.
I emailed the company 2 weeks ago but got no reply. I think their email form on the website has issues because I sometimes get replies and sometimes don’t.
Alex, I think you are correct. I’ve seen someone else mention that exact thing on AGF. For me, equal tension isn’t that meaningful as I started in classical where we mix and match strings for the next tone, and equal tension is less important.
I didn’t try the SCGC strings for years because the advertising is all about the equal tension, which I don’t care about. But, when I tried them I found the tone and lifespan are amazing so that’s why I use them.
For me, and others I’ve seen comment on the subject, it’s not slippage or any sort of left hand thing but it’s about the tone. I play fingerstyle so I can compensate in ways and make the tone fatter. But, it would be much nicer to be able to get a thicker high E to get the tone a little fuller. I feel the parabolics are wonderful at getting an even FEEL across the strings but they lack an even TONE when you get to the high E. That’s not something that’s just exclusive to these strings but, for me, it’s the only thing keeping them from being my perfect string.
Thanks for checking, Hank. Your quick reply saved me a few hundred bucks.
March 7, 2024 at 7:46 pm in reply to: Santa Cruz Coffee Break # 73 Zoomin’ with Richard Hoover and Redwood #8671LOVED this episode. I am over the moon about redwood after getting my SCGC sinker 000 a few months ago. It gives me the things I was always fighting to get out of spruce topped guitars. Instant response and lush overtones with no cloudiness. The slightest inflections let me convey emotion the way a high-end classical does. As soon as I can move a couple of my adi spruce guitars I’ll be getting another SCGC in redwood.

Wow, how cool. My two SCGC so far have been purchased used but the company was still SO helpful with the questions I had. They even insisted on having someone call me to give a thorough reply. Really endeared me to this company.
Stark contrast to the grumpy response I got from the maker of a certain.. “amphibious” brand of high-end guitar.
It will vary throughout the year so keep an eye on it. I like the sound of my guitars between 40 and 45%, but target 45% to be safe. Treating the whole room is the only reasonable option for me as I have too many instrument but if you only have a few, the humipacks are a good way to go.
SCGCs are very lightly built and thinner woods respond more rapidly to changes. Rapid movement in wood is what you really want to watch out for the most. But, long-term is also a concern. Humidity that’s high can cause braces or the bridge to lift. Plus, guitars just sound muffled when kept at high humidity.
I won’t speak for them but you should definitely search online if you’re curious as there’s a wealth of info about this wood. Most of it went to other builders, some of whom have elaborated on it. Not just in ads but on the AGF as well. Hope that helps and I hope you get a reply here too.
I love dark guitars. This one didn’t look like much in pics but, in person, the rays roll and sparkle like the ocean at night. The tone matches the look. Deep and sparkly.
Thanks for the pics.
Hi!
Can this site host pics or do I need to use a link to an outside hosting site?
Congrats! Being in my 40’s it’s inspiring to see guys older than myself playing and enjoying life. Takes away some of the sigmas and fears.
Great pic. Thanks for sharing.
When the content creators get back home and have time to edit their videos, I’m sure YouTube will be flooded with footage.
Thanks for the update.
