I only had one chat with Frank. It was a highly technical one and he was incredibly candid and humble. Amazing guy and I hope his website stays for years to come as it’s an absolute treasure.
I’d love to hear more details about this. I’m a big believer in hide glue, having some many repairs using it.
I tune to D and D# and I just use the standard sets, light for my 00 and H13s, and mediums for the 000 and dreads. I’d normally never use lights (12’s) down to D but my SCGCs stay so focused sounding it isn’t a problem. For other guitars I’ve needed thicker strings.

Living in Phoenix, the winter weather is uplifting for me. I become very productive. Our summers are like winters elsewhere, we stay indoors and become moody.

Hello James!
There’s an old video on YouTube showing an SCGC master luthier tuning the top then signing it. It’s very well done and pretty much answers part of your question. They have a specific process (or series of goals) for top tuning so the results should be roughly the same, regardless who signed it. I believe one of mine has two signatures.
Welcome Mike!
Welcome aboard, Gary!
June 14, 2024 at 1:42 am in reply to: Are you using humidity control products in the case with your acoustic guitar(s) #8785I do whole-room humidity with an evaporative humidifier. For me, there’s a lot of benefits and it’s really the only feasible thing given I have numerous instruments.
My redwood 000 has dark tortoise binding that is similar to what you describe. I think most or all of them are bound because SCGC pride themselves on making high end instruments. They tend to not do budgetary things like no binding.
It’s a good price (the used one, not the one in the first post). I’ve seen several SCGCs at even better prices lately and I personally picked up a great condition 00 for about 1/4 of the new price. I’ve never seen one without cracks for this price. I’m still shocked at how lucky I got. Was going to flip it but it’s just incredible sounding. I can’t let it go.
Interesting thing is that normally priced ones are still selling so it’s not like SCGCs are losing value. The market is just weird now.
I finally got a reply. Apparently, they don’t receive the strings separate so they don’t have singles to offer. I hope to see that change as I mostly love these but the high E on the low tensions is is not my favorite.
Strings are largely a personal choice and the best thing a person can do is try different ones. I think it’s less about the instrument and more about how it’s being played and what sound the player wants. We’re not all making the same music in the same ways.
