Edit: My main concern right now is will the extra height of my elbow cause any strain since the OM G is 16″ lower bout…. but it does have a small waist and I can play classical position instead of across lap.
I just want to say I got the armrest today, tried it out..
My very first impression was oh no it made it thinner… but that was just on that one song.
Everything else I played was just outright better. Surprisingly so, so I want to make a video and put it up.
Is it possible to upload audio to the forum directly, or do I need to YouTube and then link it here? I may do that anyway so people can hear the difference. My wife approved and said 95% of the time the arm rest is better.
My theory is my OM Grand is weak from E F F# and G on the low E, so when I muffle it the extra mud adds a bit of thickness to that.
I was surprised also to hear more woodiness and open response, drier articulation with a more precise thump. It was simply more pleasing. Long term will tell….
In regards to comfort I’m impressed with it so far
Just wanted to give first report. It’s easy to install, comfortable, nicer than expected (texture), and sounds great. Pricey, but worth it. Not pricey for sonic improvement, just pricey for what it is…. but when you’re spending 7-15K on a guitar what’s 78 dollars is my reasoning. Just as a point of view on the product though it seems like it could be more reasonably priced. This isn’t really the forum for reasonably priced goods though lol so I’m going to give them that omission.

Acoustic Soul.
Absolutely… even down to triangle, teardrop, jazz, or rounded blue chip pick or 35 thickness vs 50 (.8 vs 1.5 mm).
Thanks Daniel, if this one doesn’t work I may still give it a try. Do you think the modern Santa Cruz cases would shut with it on there? I’ve heard some people say it was fine with their finish and some say otherwise.
We’ll see! Yeah, I think the Abel and mandolin varieties have that in common.
Yeah, I really thought they looked great… but I had two concerns. One is how does that glue do with nitro finish, and how would my case close if it was glued on.
Oh wow, they’re that prevalent huh?
I ordered the Abel today, I’ll try to remember to report in down the road. I had emailed a few mandolin arm rest makers and couldn’t get anything for guitar… one of them did make one, but it was glue on.
Would be nicer to have it made out of wood maybe?
I have only played one F and no FTC.
I love how the F just puts right back out what you put in. I think a punchier archtop sound for it would be welcome though, it was too small for a pick and seemed down on power.
I think FTC also suits your commemorative philosophy on a really high level, it’s also kind of the fancy Santa Cruz on the block for the past few years so it suits the timeframe now as well. It would showcase the best work of the shop better since it’s construction is what it is.
Having said all that both would be awesome!
How about sharing your perspective and emotions regarding the choice? The F I played I think was sitka and rosewood. It was very much asleep on the wall of a guitar shop.
On the subject of the top wood, what did they say?
I’m sure the sound hole of the bahamas would look excellent either on white sandy shores maple or hawaiian honey koa!
That’s a really cool idea too! Maybe you could do an entire theme like a caribbean treasure from an old shipwreck 🙂
And thank you for the well wishes, I married the most incredible woman I met in my life and luckily she loves music and wants me to have all the guitars 😀 😀 😀 it doesn’t get any better!
Edit: **Don’t see any way to edit, so in my post when I say abalone I don’t mean the green and blue but the golden yellow one**
Thanks for posting the audio , I didn’t know that he departed, very peaceful
Cool Matt!
Hey, sorry I’ve been inactive since the forum came back online. I actually just turned 30 in December and had my first child. I also got married last July!
First, Zorro that’s super cool and gracious of you to do such a thing! How fun!!
I applaud your choice of the FTC in many ways – which I’ll just gloss over.
In my mind the top could be some old growth adirondack… but Richard will probably have special woods he is saving for such a scenario as this. Have you heard the Tunnel 13 redwood? That blew my mind, I’m looking to have that done on my second santa cruz. I think sitka is nice but it never pleases me in any guitar I’ve played it, just lacking always compared to Italian or Adirondack to my ears. I think Italian would be too ‘singing’ or shimmery/bright for the FTC since it already has that voice. That’s why I’d have to say old growth adirondack if not Tunnel 13 or some very unusual thing that Richard comes up with.
I know maple is the most traditional choice for that guitar, but I think on the FTC it may pigeonhole it a bit in character. If going with maple, maybe a type of maple that is woodier and more pliable in the mids. I would seek to see mahogany on it as I think it would have a really cool punch overall with that body. If you’re wanting something more sparkly then you could get the Tree set on it. I also think Koa might be a very good option since you guys are talking about that since it’s similar to Mahogany.
I also agree that something West coast sourced would be cool… the way they found Tunnel 13. Hawaii isn’t too far away and since SC is all into the western swing thing a lot it’s culturally not too separate either. Didn’t a lot of slack key and slide stuff marinade in from the 40s and 50s into that kind of scene in the western US?
Definitely hide glue and adirondack bracing, I also agree that would be a really cool guitar to have a pickup in whoever said that thumbs up.
As far as the aesthetic I think a very sun glow goldish hue and pearl blocks all the way up and down fretboard would be cool… like a visit to a retrofuturism museum and the art deco period glorified in a warm amber hue. Would probably be really classy and look like the sun reflecting off the pearly gates haha.
Flamed neck
Maple binding
Abalone purfling and inlay all around
Some type of honeyed antique light amber tint top
Pearloid bridge pins with white wood
pearl blocks all the way up and down fretboard like the cowgirl one they did a few years back Clementine
Gold tuners with pearl buttons
White maple headstock overlay and Santa Cruz logo done in gold abalone or something purty… standard tuners look sweet though
Mildly yellowed bone nut and saddle
Matching rosette to inlay and purfle
Voiced to not just be delicate, but handle strumming, heavier picks, and being pushed
What do you guys think? Critique my dream 😀
