I recently had the good fortune of playing a 1935 D-28. I own a 1934 D mahogany. I was expecting a much larger difference in the tone due to the rosewood vs mahogany.

So, while my 1934D is not made of “the tree”, I tend to agree that the mahogany vs rosewood difference can be more subtle than one would expect. In my humble opinion, I think the voicing of the top is what’s driving most of what you hear.
