I am curious to know what the fretboard radius is for the standard Tony Rice.  Is it something other than 16″?

We talked with Richard today about your radius and he gave us a very good description, tune in to hear it and send your serial number to Brenda at the shop and she’ll give you the full story on your specific guitar, thanks for being patient

answers in podcast. Richard gives a great description as to why it’s not an easy answer

What Mr. Richard described is called a “compound radius.”  This is where the surface of the fingerboard is modeled as the surface of a cone, where the radius changes along its length, rather than the surface of a pipe of constant radius.

Some makers will state the radius at the nut, and also the radius higher up around the 12th fret. “Average” radius doesn’t mean anything with a compound radius.

Mr. Richard gave a clear description of the purpose of a compound radius. Thanks for asking the question
