Tail pin

Hi All, My SC OM has a ebony tail pin and no neck pin. I’m looking at head stock guitar straps.

My question is, are the tail pins glued in? Or is there any chance of pin working itself loose? I’ve only ever had electronic tail jacks, which are obviously locked it with an internal nut. I’d hate for it to work loose…

Hi Tony,

The ebony end pin on my ’90 Tony Rice is just a tapered friction fit. It comes out with a simple twist. I do not use a strap.

Best to test it yourself. The angle at which a strap pulls on the pin means a strap typically can’t remove the pin. But, some of them get quite loose. If you find it’s not snug enough for you, I’d use nothing more than a drop of white or yellow glue. Something that can be broken loose should it ever need to be removed for repair or modification.

I’ve got a friction fit ebony pin in my dreadnought.  Never had a problem with it coming loose in 23 years.

I’ve got a screw-in strap button on the treble side of the heel as well.  I’ve never been comfortable with a strap tied to the headstock.  The guitar slides too far to my right, and my right hand runs too far up the fret board.

Strap buttons can be added cheaply and easily.

it would be best to install a strap holder on the neck where it joins the body, top or bottom of the nexk is your choice, get a luthier to install if you haven’t done it, it’s simple, just go slow
