More than a week since anyone posted. Shameful. What are guys, busy or something? 😉
Claudine and I host monthly jams here at “La Manoir de Breuil.” It’s taking a while to develop a usual crowd, but it’s coming along.
Sunday we had our April jam and were graced by Laurent (guitar and an enormous catalog of songs) and Vincent (flute and improvisatory skills). Claudine alternated between my SCGC and her Martin. Someone was playing my Rainsong. And we got out the violent orange Ibanez too.
I played my Arrow G5 mandolin through a small and unobtrusive Marshall bedroom amp. I had the full board going, too.
A good time was had by all for about 3 hours. And I was utterly exhausted by the end. (Speaking French, following new tunes, improvising solos, and comping for three hours is kinda tiring when youre 60!)
What’re y’all gettin’ upto?
Daniel

Hey Daniel,
Thanks for the update. I’m getting ready to play some Banner Gibson’s at John Thomas’s opening this weekend, first gig since 1979, hope I don’t totally blow it

I am heading off to The Artisan Guitar Show later this week in Harrisburg, PA (https://artisanguitarshow.com/). SCGC will not be there, but a variety of luthier made and other small shop makers as well as some fine performers. I am looking forward to catching up with some old friends, playing some fine guitars and seeing some excellent performances.

Not sure if he’s exhibiting. I read from his Instagram that he was attending.

Did you get to meet Tad at Bruce Sexuar’s station?

Richard, yes Tad and I spent a whole bunch of time together (we know each other) both in and outside the show. I did also meet Brad Corney and auditioned some of his guitars.

Richard,
How did the gig go?
I took the family to Chateau Chantilly last weekend. Amazing place. If you like art, painting and scultpure especially, you should visit. I was literally inches away from Renoir’s The 3 Muses, nothing but the frame’s glass between me and it. Amazing.
Been practicing playing my own harmony parts with the looper. Not easy. Clearly I need to run scales more often.
🙂

Brad was a nice young builder. Sounds like he is based in Santa Rosa. He had a number of archtops in his booth and a nylon string. I tried two of his archtops and they were both fine guitars (given the constraints of my perception in a somewhat loud exhibitor hall). It sounds like he will be building flattops for Eric Schoenberg as well.

Daniel,
The guitars were amazing, tough to do an open mic between sets of a loud country band, wouldn’t have missed a minute of the time with John Thomas as well, I let other people go in front of me, I think the world is a better place for it.

I’ve spoken via email with Brad regarding my Old ’97. I’ve considered shaving the neck.
I’m also getting a left handed Martin 0018 from the family of a friend who recently passed away. The friend and I met up in Chicago in 2018 for a guys only long weekend.
He had purchased the 0018 the day I arrived.
I’ll have Brad make a new nut and bridge saddle and see what to do with the pick guard.
Yes, I’m right handed.

Bought myself an Ambient pedal made by Walrus Audio. Basically it’s an ambient reverb pedal. It part of their Fundamental series, and was only 109 euros.
Three modes, three controls, and ‘tails’. Love the tails.
Very very cool. Highly recommended if you want to dip a toe into the ambient thing.
