I recently took a chance and picked up an SCGC Uke from a seller in Japan. I wanted one ever since hearing Mr Hoover mention them on the podcast. It’s wild to see the SCGC master craftsmanship in this stripped-down, miniature form. It has a dreamy, bell-like quality to the sound.

Does anyone know anything about these?? Mr Hoover mentioned that these took as much effort as a guitar and thus weren’t very profitable. But, there’s almost NO other info out there aside from a few people on the uke underground speaking of them in glowing terms about 10 years ago. The only thing I have to compare it to is a $3,000 Kanilea and the SCGC is built much better.

They made not very many of them – as far as I know they were offered in mahogany or koa, but I heard a rumor about maybe one in Brazilian.  As Richard said – while they are smaller, thus using less material, they take an equal amount of labor, and thats where most of the cost is. So if you do find one, they tend to be pricey – but they are excellent instruments –  and everyone likes pics –
