-
November 22, 2018 at 4:30 pm #1642
Last year Walzem and I brought beat up tweeds. I had a lap steel. This year I can throw in a Les Paul Jr. and my Melody Maker with PAFs. Heck, maybe I’ll just bring a bunch of amps and oddball electric too.

Matt Hayden is more than welcome to take along all the amps he’s currently storing for me. 🙂
They’re small but make nice sounds.

I suspect this will happen this Friday as that’s the date of the party, sometime between 7-8 pm Pacific time, I’ll shoot for 7:30 but traffic could be a factor….if not, I’ll take a bunch of Pic’s

Have to cancel. Hauling two dogs, finding a place to stay, four hour drive, too much darn trouble.

Originally, the wife said yes. Then she said no. I lined up a Cruz owning friend to come along. Then the wife said she wanted to go. I looked at renting a motor home for the weekend. Came to $500. A hotel was $130. Air Bnb was $90. Turns out she had to cancel her hair appt. I just decided to give up,
then I found out Tony McManus was playing nearby.
lets have our own party somewhere and sometime.

That was a strange-looking banjar, I think.
-
December 16, 2018 at 2:03 am #1712
More to the point, it was a 4-string plectrum banjo from the 1920s. Most of us have seen banjos with 10” or 11” heads, but during the jazz age, banjo head size increased in size so they’d be loud enough to be heard in the horn-based bands then preeminent. This is what led to the dobro, George Beauchamp’s electric pickups, and electric guitars….so maybe banjos aren’t an entirely unremitting horror.

I Was trying to figure what the back was made from. An old tortoise shell ? Or some gargantuan peyote button. Lol

Looked like ceramic to me. There’s an artist in Pacifica who builds new backs and stuff for old blown-out instruments….but the parts beyond the resonator were all tenor banjo.

More please!
Those of us too far to travel want the vicarious experience. 😉
Who’s that playing mando next to the bull fiddle. He has a passing resemblance to Robin Bullock.
