I’ve got a question regarding the DADGAD set…
I’ve got an OMPW and am very interested in them. I’d likely keep them in alternate tunings most of the time. But…is it safe to tune them up to standard as well?
Would that cause any issues?Eric

Hey Eric,
Richard Newman here. I have them on a dedicated guitar, I’d be worried about leaving a guitar tuned up with those, but YMMV. I’m sure some other folks with chime in

Big Mon , move this to General Discussion if you want.
Eric, I have had a DADGAD set( changed twice) on my SCGC 000…….I don’t even think about tuning other than what they were designed for….. Richard Hoover is pretty finite about what he sells.

My SCGC FS came with SCGC Low Tension strings plus one extra set in the case. My initial impression was not that positive. I changed. Them out for 53-54/12 acoustic light strings which I preferred tone wise. After 10 months of using traditional acoustic lights, I decided put the second set of SCGC low tension parabolic strings back on and again. Again, I was not impressed sound wise. Very easy to play, very neutral sounding but a bit thin sounding in the trebles compared to traditional acoustic lights. To be thorough, I just ordered a few sets of the SCGC mid tension set to give them a try. I understand they are more comparable tension wise to a traditional acoustic light set. I play with both a heavy pick and my fingers.

I put a Mid Tension set of SCGC Parabolics on my SCGC FS today. There is simply no comparison to my ears how much better they sound compared to the Low Tension set that was on it, particularly in the trebles. I play with both a fairly heavy pick and my fingers but I don’t have a particularly strong attack.
The set timbrally thicker (naturally based on their heavier gage) but the G and the D strings still have lower tension than a conventional 53/12 set (no doubt through greater mass by core/wrap manipulation). In fact the D string despite being a higher gage than the low tension set is lower in tension. The new packaging while no doubt protective is not intuitive for a new user in terms of how the strings are organized (low E + D, A + B and D + E).
String——Mid———Tension——-Low——Tension—
E————0.013”———22.5———0.012”——–20—— + 2.5 lb.
B————0.0165”——-24———-0.016”——-22.5—— + 1.5 lb.
G————0.024”——-28.5———0.023”——-27.9——+ 0.6 lb.
D————0.033”——-28.5———0.032”——-30.5—- (- 2.0 lb.)
A————0.045”——-32.5———0.044”——–28——+ 4.5 lb.
E————0.054”———27———-0.054”—-—-27———Same
Total———————-163.0——————-——-155.9—
