As some of you know I’m a wood hound .  Some 30 years back I bought aHawaiian koa slab from a woodworking friend to build a few pieces of furniture for my then soon to be built new Californio rancho home.
decided it would be a adventurous choice to mill some up for miscellaneous stringed instrument projects ukulele, flamenco and now numbering around 6 custom SCGC Koa builds all beautifully built by Richard Hoover and crew.

let me get right to the point. Finally decided upon having a OM Grand built. Adirondack top with some gemstone quality bear claw chatoyance and my koa back and sides.  Simple conservative herringbone purfle and rosette slathered with a roasted and toasted buttered toast burst.   Adirondack bracing attached with hide glue

Thank you Richard,Carolyn ,Adam and crew for my lovely new guitar

If there was ever a man who deserved such a beautiful guitar it’s you Chris. I hope you can put all that you have expeienced in the last year into this instrument and make it’s voice available to us.

            Play on.

                Chris,

What a great story involving your home with the furniture, and so many beautifully constructed instruments, all from the same source. They must be so “happy” to be there together. I can only imagine the feeling of harmony that results when you pick up any one of them and make beautiful music surrounded by your Koa cousins! Muy simpatico.

Would you consider posting some “family” photos of your collection?

                Thanks for sharing.

                Walter

Well I dislike spoiling a happy ending but. All the other SCGC custom koa’s have all past along down the road to other homes.. Just not wealthy enough to own so many fine instruments.  Each have left there mark and furthered my education to do with tone searching and my life loving Santa Cruz Guitar Company and all it represents .

Iwill try to find photos of those that have found new homes as well as a few better lighted pics of the OMG.

                  Thanks Walter

                    Chris,

I understand. I have similar regrets. Sold a ’68 SG Standard for a song when I unplugged in ’71. Love to have that one back. In college at the time and needed money. The purchaser was delighted to get it. Oh well.

                    Sharing is caring!

                    Best,

                    Walter

Fantastic story and what a beautiful OMG. Every time (like this morning) I play my 3-year old Euro/Cocobolo OMG, I’m reminded of just how good that guitar is. I don’t play the “best guitar ever” game because there are just too many fantastic guitars. However, I can say there is no better guitar then my SCGC OMG, and I’m sticking to that. Yours is probably another example of perfection. Beautiful!

Yep. The one that got away was my 000 all koa. Had it for four years .it was just beginning its flowering bloom with that hardwood koa top.  Could’ve should’ve would’ve.  No regrets

Wonderful, down to earth build  Chris, thanks.

With all the gaudy/blingy guitars out there, I never understand why buyers don’t appreciate the most basic vibe above all. I often ask if it’s about the guitar show or the music foremost?

As bro Ray Charles used to say ‘you got the right one baby’… uh-huh’.

                          🙂 bert

Hey Bert. I’m guilty of owning a number of bling’y guitars . They all have their places in the heart.  Just nothing like a solid classic herringbone look.

I’m glad to hear that. At least you had a small distraction. I hope you are doing well.

Chris, hope I didn’t offend. I also have a deep appreciation for the classic herringbone look, your OM build is top shelf and what I go for always. Very sorry to learn of your chemo treatments, wish for the best. bert

No offense taken Bert.  I think many of us enjoy a variety of flavors when it comes to guitar embellishments.
sometimes garlic, butter and white wine hits the spot other times simple-salt n pepper does the trick

like The lads from Liverpool once said “its getting better all the time”.
