I dismissed my guitar player the other day.  I’m utterly bored with my own material and I don’t have the juice to go digging for gigs in the COVID adjusted live music world.

I reclaimed the Rainsong I loaned him as part of the group.  So now I’m getting re-acquainted with it.  The neck is still too wide at 1 3/4″, but the guitar is really cool.  It’s excellent for single note melodies and double stops, but it tops out quick when chorded.  I’ve spent a couple days (really moments between minding the kids, re-painting the bathroom, taking care of the garden, etc) playing some of my material on it rather than mandolin.  It’s good mental exercise.

So far I’m interested to try working up White Flower Waltz, Humphreys Waltz, and Unexpectedly as real guitar pieces.  I might also take a stab a Eric Skye’s The Locktender’s Reel with improvised bits and all. (I play the Locktender’s Reel on octave mandolin but without improvising.  So the melody is pretty well ingrained.)

On the mandolin side, I’m starting a new project with another musician (Jean-Phillipe Mary http://www.marymusic.fr) and his particular style is new to me.  I’m playing a lot more 7-9 chords and maj7 chords, and using other types of pop music rhythms like disco, soul, and funk.  So stretching there as well.

And a cool bit of synchonicity:  Luthier Paul Lestock just changed his FB profile pic to a shot of the back of the G5 I own –an image he must have taken years ago.  I saw his post and thought… “Heyyyy, I know that bit of quilted maple!” So I sent him an updated version via the same thread.  🙂

        Just keeping on…

          Daniel,

Good to hear from you. I think we’re all over all of this, in the past week, I’ve lost 3 HUGE jobs for me, multi-camera- multi-track audio because people are stupid.

I’ll tell you what’s keeping me going is on line lessons, I’ve bought about 10 from Homespun and Peghead Nation is giving anybody on this forum a free month……just use discount code santacurz

We’re all in this together, share the love between us all, hold each other up and we’ll be fine, go change strings on that Mando, I just did mine, it’s a great 2 hour killer…..peace brother, keep on keeping on

            Thanks Richard!

Hey did you lose any blood changing strings?  If not, you didn’t do it right!  😉

Good to know about Peghead Nation. I have been thinking about guitar lessons…

Sorry to hear about the work.  That must be a bummer.   All we can do is keep moving forward.

Interesting information guys. Here in the heartland it’s business as usual, but. We are always affected late in the game so I see it coming. I have been doing a weekly open mic lately where most people are vacinated. I do about five songs a week. I rotate through about fifty songs. This week the plan is for a mandolin/harp player friend of mine to sit in. It will be fun. Being retired it has been special to me. Take care.

                  Aww hell.  Sorry Richard.

At least you’ve changed your strings properly.

FWIW, very quiet on the private client (English lessons) front here too.  It’s summer, and French people prefer not to work in July and August.  I expect things will pick up in September, “God-willin’ and the crick don’t rise.”

Gigs in California were starting up again. Then the Delta variant started to defy vaccinations. The band Grateful Shred played to a full house in Felton,  up the road from the Mother Temple.

In spite of vaccinations, the entire band got Delta sized.

I have/had a NYE gig here. 30 minutes as an opener. I’ve been writing surf inspired instrumentals. The venue owner told me that advance ticket sales ground to a halt due to the rise of infections. I already bought tix for Los Lobos and Sierra Hull.

We shall see how it goes.
