Ready? The holes are for jewels that haven’t been installed yet. Still got 10 days…….how do they sound? Built by Richard Hoover with the finest tone woods on the planet……

“Built by Richard Hoover with the finest tone woods on the planet……”
i agree with this part. wow on the design. now, and i really don’t want to create drama, but a pickup? really?

The ornamentation is more than I would want in my instruments but I do respect the artistry and understand the importance of bringing eye-grabbing pieces to the trade shows. Nice to see the scrimshaw making an appearance!

PTO, that was my first thought. Why a P/U on an intrument built from the oldesr woods on the planet ?
UNLESS…..RH has created a pickup system that eminates from the wood itself……..
Or, the guitar is going to a “stage player with Serious Chops”……

well, i thought of that… something organic… i hope. i remember when Brand M did their millionth… they took a wonderful piece of braz (extremely rare for them to even sell nice brazilian) and had Larry Robinsin rout most of the surface away for inlays. i mean, they HAD the brazilian…:) well, RH knows what he’s doing… he IS the man.

PTO for the Win!!! It’s a totally new pickup system developed with LRBaggs and the guitars are meant to make music and change the world, put them on stage and play the crap out of them.

While I appreciate the demonstration of the luthier’s craft with the exquisite execution of instrument ornamentation in terms of marquetry, shell, inlay and scrimshaw etc., I do feel it competes and diminishes from the “center of the plate”, which is about the quality of the rare soft and hardwoods. The aesthetic choices are a bit much for me and compete with the beautiful tonewood sets (sorry).
That said, I suspect that I am likely in the minority, and SCGC who understands their market, and retailers who will be receiving these “showcase” guitars will be delighted with the “bling”. The historic Martin paradigm of value is strong in the acoustic guitar market (e.g., Style 45 < Style 42 < Style 28 < Style 18 etc.). This construct has unfortunately influenced many to believe mahogany is an inferior (not different, and preferred) tonewood to many guitarists as well.

sadly, agreed. see my larry robinson, martin millionth above. i’m all about the wood… with the exception that martin’s 45 style is elegant to me. but, have to hold off to see what the completed headplate looks like.

“SCGC who understands their market”
That’s really the key. You’ll notice that Richard never (from what I’ve seen) goes on about the super exotic woods being “better” necessarily, but that they do more of one thing or another.
I deal in audio products and there are some customers who simply want “the best”, regardless of price. I used to explain to them that there isn’t such a thing. That audio is personal and subjective. Then I smartened up and realized they aren’t shopping for an item, they’re shopping for an experience. So, I sell them the items that are rare and they can brag about online. Items that they can FEEL GOOD about. Because these aren’t tone hunters, they are treasure hunters.

Love it Bowie! I think these guitars are as much about respect for tradition as anything else. Richard and SCGC really were one of the first pioneers of boutique guitar market, or to name differently, the custom guitar market. Richard is using over 50 years of research and experience to build these instruments that will make music and change the world. Along with that the wood used in these guitars is simply unubtainium, I don’t think it’s about anything other than respect for the planet, violin building traditions and this incredible wood and talent. my.02
