Every 21st of June France does something so cool that I’m surprised more countries don’t do it.
La Fête de la Musique is a national day for everyone to enjoy music. if you create it, you will be called upon to share. If you don’t you’ll have dozens of opportunities to roam your town and listen to free concert after concert after concert.
The kids and I were willing participants again this year. We started in the afternoon at l’eglise Saint Martin, a beautiful, if somewhat dilapidated, medieval church that was once the heart of an abby. My son played violin in the children’s string orchestra, and then he and his sister sang in the choir.
The adult choir was next, with the women preceding the men. We, the men, sang “May the Road Rise to Meet You.” Then all of the choirs (children included) sang “La Vidjame,” and Mary Lightfoot’s version of “Dona Nobis Pachem.”
That ran from about 5 to about 6:45pm. At which point I hopped in a car full of gear and drove to the next stage.
Had to carry the gear about 150 meters to arrive at our outdoor stage in front of lovely little specialty restaurant called Le Peche Mingnon (the cute/sweet peach). I played with my friend Laurent (him on guitar, me on emando) from 8 to about 9:30.
Set list:
- Honky Tonk Women (Stones)
- Under a Stormy Sky (Lanois)
- Encore et Encore (Cabrel)
- La Banane (Katherine)
- Apache (the Shadows, etc)
- Summertime (Gershwin)
- Ain’t No Sunshine (Withers)
- O Shenandoah –mixing translated and non-translated verses (traditional)
- Losing My Religion (REM)
- C’est Noyé (V.Vox)
- Fragile (Sting)
- Cactus (Dutronc)
A young local reporter took photos and video, got our names, and will publish today in the local paper.
By 9:30 the town was filling up with the under 30 crowd, and it was time to put the kids to bed. We went home buy the revelries lasted until 1am. We know how to party here. 😉
