I am new to owning a SCGC guitar, and I’m hinging my thoughts that it was a one of kind or at most, a few of a kind and was ordered for someone else, and not by be 15 years ago. And it doesn’t have a pickguard. I am told that the 000 was ordered to a store in Mesa, AZ in 2011, and the money never got paid for the guitar, so the guitar put it up for sale eventually. A friend of mine, purchased it, and never really played it, so it looked brand new until this month, when after seriously only a few hours of play with a pick, one can detect the use of the pick is making it’s appearance on the guitar where a pick guard would normally be installed.
My questions are –
a. How do we collectively feel about adding one to a guitar that the builder didn’t want on there (perhaps the person making an order)?
b. Is it a large undertaking to have a qualified luthier put one on a guitar?
c. Open to all suggestions on what brand and style to put on the guitar as I have zero knowledge of what SCGC would use for pickguards.

You can call the SC office, provide the serial number for more info. I’m sure it was intended for finger picking so no pickguard. I own a OOO with a pickguard. I would call SC and ask to buy a pickguard for the OOO. That way you’ll be getting the one designed for the guitar, the correct thickness etc, and the choices available. I would also ask if they could recommend a dealer near you to do the work. You want to make sure it’s on there so there’s no residual vibration.
Where are you located?

Hello icenine, and thank you for the input. I am in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. The SCGC website lists Stevie’s as the dealer in the area. I could call them.

My 1982 Dread Cutaway came with a clear pickguard. 10 years ago, SCGC replaced it with another clear pickguard.
The old one showed lots of wear and tear.

I like a top without a pick guard, it’s crazy but I think it lets the top vibrate more, maybe a silly thought but I go with it..

I love the look of no pickguard, but I don’t want a hole in the guitar eventually either like Trigger, for example.
If I only was a fingerpicker, I’d for sure never put one on this. And you may be right about that resonation, icenine suggested that if you do put one on, make sure it doesn’t cause residual vibrations.

It’s a crazy theory of mine, I’m not sure it’s based in science. If you can wear a hole in the top, it’s a badge of honor, here’s a shot of mine, no pick guard and I use a flat pick and thumb pick

Oh man – what a beautiful top on your guitar. And I suppose you are right – a badge of honor it may be then. At my age, it’s probably going to belong to the son, that badge, but he’d probably be proud!

I have a guitar that never had a pickguard. The top is quite worn in that spot. Doesn’t seem to hurt the sound or integrity of the top.
It’s your choice.

Well perhaps leave it be – Since it’s stained, it may be more apparent than a more natural finish. Time will be the guide!
