I have to admit, I’m very happy with the guitars I have, and it takes something pretty incredible to give me GAS, but when it last came up, I fought it off very simply. I had a few older guitars that I knew could benefit from some careful attention, so I took three over to Schoenbergs in Tiburon to have an old acquaintance do some major work. And now, a few months later, I’ve just picked them up –

In no particular order – this is an older D (‘88)  some lovely darkened wide-grained sitka (maybe?) over lovely old brazilian rw. It has a bunch of finish checking, and some other minor cosmetic issues, which is why it was listed pretty inexpensively, but it has my much preferred wide nut, and after a few new frets and a complete set-up, it sounds great!

next – I’ve had this guitar for some years – maple F 12 string, ‘93 – lovely, sounded good, very playable, but clearly could use a reset, so I decided to include this in the repair group. Well, getting a higher break angle has made a huge difference in the volume of this one, and maybe some improvement in tone? That, or finally getting some fresh new SC  strings on it!

Finally, FTC #30 – a very special order from ‘81. The decoration and aesthetics of it made it impossible for me to not buy it (it even has a wide neck!) but even though it seemed virtually unplayed, 40+ years had made it need a reset, so off it went, amd again, with the much better break angle (and fresh strings and set-up) it is an amazingly powerful and full sounding maple guitar – I am really looking forward to spending more time with it –

So – for far less than the price of a used, mediocre guitar, I have 3 absolutely amazing older Santa Cruz’s that play and sound fantastic. Definitely, GAS gone!!

You know Hank, I have 2 SCGC F 12ers – one in maple, one in walnut – plus an electric. 3 is a bit much. If you’re really interested, we can probably come to an arrangement –

of course, I also have 3 SCGC baritones, and I probably should do something about that as well –

                  one of these days –
