I have recently dodged a very High Humidity Bullett by just a 1/4 mile .
The Ramuda is high & dry and the 34 Zorro has traveled to the Left Coast for some recreation.
The Very close call has awakened the averice of aquisition…. but with a “Twist”
I have been playing the Taylor K62ce non stop for 5 days. A 12 er just seems to fit the mood.
The 12 string guitar was the “First” guitar I ever heard…It may well be the ‘Last”….
I am having an extrordinary case of ” How Did I Get This Fucking Lucky”.? A bit of survivors guilt ?
So …..If You were to have SCGC 12 custom build , What size, what model, what wood combo ?
My “Storm Stash Cash” was lightly tapped…. and I hope to make a reasonable deal with a SCGC Dealer.
Please respond ASAP…….. I’m OLD
Fair Winds,
Hank

Ok oldman I’m a lot like you are? Richard once made the suggestion of a H13 as a unique build platform for a 12 string. I’m in agreeance. Some of the master grade or sinker redwood atop some quilted German maple would likely be my choice as a starting point.. I think the redwood would tame some of the kingly jangly morning stuff.

12 strings are powerful beasties and sometimes difficult to wrangle.
I was thinking: you would want to focus the sound a bit in order to avoid taking up all the sonic space in the room. So yeah, the H13 could well be the ticket.A normal scale length (25.5″) might feel less articulate with 12 strings, so something shorter (24.9″ maybe) might be of interest.
Questions:
- Will you tune down to D or C?
- Will you use alternate tunings?
- Leadbelly, Leo Kotke, or The Rooftop Singers?
🙂
Glad you’ve avoided the worst of it all!

As in most things guitar related I tend to like Chris’s thoughts……but I seek further input ( in writing) of not only “The Players In The Park” but also of the other members of the Forum who may have such interest. The i will ask “The Maestro” his ideas for such a critter.
Also I’m really wanting to compare a SCGC 12er to My Taylor K62ce all Koa. I have strung it with the SCGC 12 string set….. As I told Chris and Big Mon I think it may be the most comfortable neck I have ever played. It is the size Taylor calls Grand Audotorium . Maybe SCs OMG ? The sound with the SC strings is Fantastic and very clear. I’m not looking to replace it.
A Note : the recent storm that hit my backyard destroyed some of the most beautiful islands in this country. Until the rebuilding is well along they will be off limits and that is going to take a good bit of time.
So exploring a 12 string build will keep me from buying more camera equipment…..

BTW, you do realize that 12 string guitars are a gateway drug. You’ll be looking at mandolins next!

No, Friend Daniel not The Mando…..I would try to learn the fiddle before I would enter the Rabbit Hole that is the dreaded Mando .
As to models I’m contemplating… I think either the H or OMG. If R.H. thinks those models would be stong enough over the long haul .
B/S & Top woods are still a mystery……

Redwood on mahogany sounds like a nice combination. With the H I’m picturing a sound somewhere between Leadbelly and a grand piano. 🙂
I’m sure the folks at SCGC will make something amazing.

Well… The recent Hurricane and conversations with SCGC have caused me to set a different course regarding a 12er .
SCGC is well over a year out on delivery of a custom build…..I’m 76 now I would be almost 78 when I would recieve a ordered now build.
The devistation caused to my hometown and surrounding areas will take years to rebuild and it will be much different than the “Old Florida” that I loved so much.
Soooo… I have decided to enjoy my Taylor K62ce that I bought from Chris ( it really is a spectacular instrument ) and search for the rare SCGC 12er in the preowned market. If there are some out there ,with a wood combo I like I would be interested in ,I would make a fair offer.
If anyone has one and is interested in selling or trading let me know.
