18 pages of photographs from a pedal makers camera, I’ll just leave this here

              Big Mon,

I recieved the FJ 50th today and knowing the kind soul you are ,I was wondering if you thought the 18 pages of images might have best been displayed in a different publication rather than in a historic 50th anniversary edition of ” A GUITAR ” publication ???

I’ll just leave that here, I have great respect for Jason, and I’m honored to have had my work displayed in FBJ. After 30 years in photo publishing, splitting landscape images down the center of the fold is something that I would never get away with, I liked the work, I’m confused as to how it is relevant to a historic issue we have waited a long time for.

                  Well said Big Mon.

I wonder if others are as questioning?

But…..I did enjoy the photos that SCGC and other builders supplied for their ads.

I agree Hank and Richard. I was looking for something more related to fretboards. Hmmm.

The Howard Dumble article is beyond great

yip, the 50th issue was quite a letdown to me after all the hype.  just another issue.  then, considering Jason’s incredible challenges in getting a fine publication out which has lasted this long, i shouldn’t complain.  unlike so many enthusiast publications in all markets, FJ never has had a “hot-new-gear” issue.:) plus, i got to write an article in #21.

Peter, yes, I recall your article about Bob Shane’s D-28. It was a very cool, informative, firsthand look into that iconic instrument and the man behind it. Thanks again for that!

                              Pto,

The Kingston Trio (along with Bob Gibson, The Chad Mitchell Trio, and the Limelighters) were the largest influence on me in the beginning  years of my guitar journey.

I really enjoyed Bob Shanes persona and voice.

I have searchrd on line for your article but can’t find it……..Can you tell me where I might locate it ?

Hank-  Jason didn’t put my article online (i can email you the raw text if you like and the photos we used), although he did put Bobby’s article online.  I introduced Jason to Bob, and Jason interviewed him for Issue #23.  Below is a link to Bob’s Article.  I was fortunate to become good friends with Bob, Nick and John, all separately.  I didn’t seek them out (way too shy), they “fell into my lap,” so to speak, all independently. Sheer luck. Here is Bobby’s article: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/features/bob-shane-behind-stripes/

While delving a bit deeper into the issue, specifically the Bela Fleck article, I noticed a detail that I had overlooked the first time through. The detailed photo of Bela’s new banjo head caught my attention. The one showing the strings crossing the bridge down to the tailpiece. The photo is reversed as if it is a left-handed banjo. I understand that photos are often reversed for artistic reasons during the layout, however, this publication is dedicated to fretboards. It’s hard to look at the pic without wincing a bit. My apology if I am coming across as too critical, but as an amateur luthier, I relish the details of the various instrument builds accompanied by the related photos.

Tell me I’m off base and I will accept that. My morning rant, now back to work. 😉

                                    Walter,

It’s been with us forever and I dislike the idea of flipping pictures, there is a pretty large historical trail to doing this to guitarists, Muddy Waters, Albert King and several others come to mind, it’s just plain wrong

Thought that would be a sensitive subject for you Richard.
