Rick Turner started a thread on the hazards of DIY lutherie on FB.
What do you feel comfortable doing yourself?
I’ll start –
- nuts – adjust & create new
- saddles – adjust and create new
- truss rod – adjust, very little
- fret dressing. I’ve done fretwork but not as well as I’d like.
That’s mostly it for me. What about everyone else?

I’m better at demolition than I am at fine finish work. My hanks are too big to do much inside a guitar (except change batteries . I have adjusted truss rods very little .
Luckily non of the Ramuda needs any fixing at the moment.
Oh…. I do do my own restrings………just did the 12 string…..now that’s work !

One of my favorite sayings is that “if it don’t come in a can, I don’t know anything about it”
Matt, about the same here… mostly DIY setup tweaks:
– adj truss rod (approx) .005″- action (approx) 3/32 low E and 2/32 high E
– slot bridge – round pins
– cut new nuts/saddles as needed
– replace tuning machines, pickguards, etc
– some limited drop fillsBeing retired is goodly. bert

I’m with Rich.
I’ll adjust intonation on an electric but not on an acoustic.
Happy to swap out parts easily removed, but my soldering is usually pretty messy.
If I would need to glue it, un-glue it, shim it, shave it, cut it, file it, or clamp it then it’s going to a pro.
