Hey Y'all!  Howdy From Anaheim California.

Ken and I got in last night around 9:30 and decided to play it cool.  So we missed John Jorgenson.  D'oh!  Shocked

This morning we started before the bell, though Ken and I went separate ways.  I went to the Mandolin Café's meet & greet. Got to see Ted Eschliman of www.jazzmando.com, Scott Tichenor of www.mandolincafe.com, Stan Werbin of Elderly Music [can't post the URL, but you can guess or look it up], Bruce Harvie of Orca's Island Tone Woods, and bunch of other mando-geeks.  Spent the morning chatting with folks about the retail business, the Internet business, running web sites, and playing mandolins.

Afterward, I went straight down to Hall E, where all the best acoustic instruments are, and paid my respects to RH, Tom (surfneptune), and Liz from SCGC.  Spent the rest of the day in Hall E trying to see all there was to see.

I'm taking notes, catalogs, cards, and product sheets.  Having great conversations with some very nice folks about the cool stuff they're doing.  I'll have "Daniel's product highlights" on Monday.

Tonight Ken and I went to the Voyage-Air (Harvey Leach) evening soiree, drank beer, hobnobbed, and watched some very good young talent from an agency called The Savannah Music Group Artists.  Made new acquaintances and renewed old ones.  At points it seemed like a small rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic reunion.  The "headliner" for the night was Thom Bresh.  Great picker.  Good, funny stories.

More updates later and product descriptions (can't really call them reviews) on Monday.

Wish you all were here!

Maddog,
Oh yes.  That was pretty darn cool.  Though my uke skills do not exist, so I'm a very bad judge of uke coolness.

It's one of my "go back and check that out a little more closely on Sunday" items.

Today is "cruise the upper floors day". Wink

Yesterday (Sat) I got through most of the first floor.  The highlight of the day was hanging with Jeff Cowherd of JBovier mandolins.  I tickled his wonderful 4 and 5 string solid body electric mandolins.

Amazing crowds on Sat.  Lots of celebrities, including Slash, Bootsy Collins, and a Playboy Bunny.  Celebrities mean lines for autograph seekers, amazingly costumed convention-goers, and difficulty walking from place to place.  It must be really hard to be a little eccentric here in the LA area.  A little weirdness gets lost in the crush of people looking to get noticed.

By closing time, my feet were flat, my ankles were sore, my back was stiff, and my shoulder was complaining about holding up my backpack.  Slept like a log last night after a very good Italian dinner at Marri's.

Today is "finish it out day"  The rest of the first floor and the second floor, before going back to particular places and reinvestigating some interesting stuff.  Need to say hello and goodbye to RH, Liz, Joe, Tom and Rick.  Hope to get out of here by closing time.

Hey Folks,
I have not forgotten my promise.  Been busy finalizing apps to Rogue Community College in Grant's Pass OR and Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell, MT as well as prepping for and teaching at Columbia College.  All while I keep an eye on things here in our little corner of the Inter-Webs.

Well the apps are done (RCC has been submitted electronically and FVCC will go in tomorrow's mail) and so is the first mandolin-centric NAMM report.  I'll do another mandolin-centric report (electric), and then I'll come back here and give you guys the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say.

Here's where you'll find the first installment: http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/blog.php?u=7779

My photos will be poor.  I only managed to remember to bring the camera on my cell phone.  But Ken took pix and I'll grab some from him.
